NAMM 2006 Show NewsSymphonic ElectronicaThis style grows out of the tradition of classical orchestral music and features synthesized orchestration. It often features melodies and harmonies that are neo-romantic in style. The best orchestral electronica uses electronics as an important element in a wider palette of instruments, to create new types of orchestration that would be impossible using traditional instruments. It takes the ideas of traditional orchestration and expands them, using the new capabilities that electronic instruments and studio treatments offer. Some of the composers that work in this style are Vangelis, Mike Oldfield, and Mychael Danna. Vangelis is the most prominent composer using this approach. His soundtracks to Blade Runner and 1492: Conquest of Paradise are good examples of the style. On both of these soundtracks, Vangelis uses traditional orchestral instruments and voices, but he dramatically expands the orchestral range through the use of synthesizers and electronic processing.
Synthtopia Orchestral Electronica ReviewsDavid Wright - ContinuumFriday, July 30, 2004With Continuum, David Wright has released a beautiful work of melodic space music that recalls classic electronic music of the seventies and eighties. ES Posthumus - UnearthedThursday, July 14, 2005ES Posthumus debut CD, Unearthed, is a collection of world orchestral dance electronica, not foo far from the territory pioneered by groups like Enigma and Deep Forest. E.S. Postumus manages to top both these predecessors with convincing orchestral writing, dynamic percussion work and creative synth work. Jean-Michel Jarre - Magnetic Fields - Les Chants MagnetiquesMonday, April 19, 2004Jean-Michel Jarre was one of the early pioneers of popular electronic music. Along with artists like Tangerine Dream and Vangelis, Jarre brought electronic music and popular music together, making music that was artistic but fairly accessible. Les Chants Magnetiques, Magnetic Fields, is a set of 5 synth tracks that capture Jarre at his peak. Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells 2003Saturday, February 14, 2004Tubular Bells, the best selling instrumental album of all times, gets re-recorded by Mike Oldfield for the 30th anniversary of the original. Oldfield recreates Tubular Bells using a combination of the latest recording technology, software synthesizers, and vintage instruments, including many of the instruments used to record the original. Tubular Bells 2003 sounds great! Mychael Danna - SirensWednesday, February 18, 2004Sirens is an interesting mix of space music and classical programatic music. It is minimal orchestral electronica, with occasional acoustic instrumentation added to provide interest and flavor. Fans of new age music and Danna will enjoy this 1991 release. Vangelis - 1492 Conquest of ParadiseThursday, February 19, 2004Conquest of Paradise is a sumptious combination of orchestral electronica, folk melodies, choral vocals and renaissance influences. Vangelis - Alexander SoundtrackThursday, November 18, 2004Alexander, the soundtrack to the Oliver Stone biopic, features Vangelis at his best. It is a rousing score, a satisfying album, and a likely Oscar contender. Vangelis - Blade RunnerFriday, February 20, 2004Blade Runner is a science fiction classic, and it has a classic electronica score to go with it. Vangelis - OceanicSunday, April 18, 2004Oceanic is a collection of tone poems with Ocean themes. On this 1996 release, Vangelis creates a soothing 50 minute journey through deep oceanic spaces, sounding a bit like a Hearts of Space show. The new age music showcases his wonderful ear for melodies and lush synthetic orchestration, but does not have the edge or sense of experimentation that marks his best work.
