How does this work?

The Synthtopia news feeds are available in a couple of forms:

Javascript - This is the easiest way to incorporate the news into your site. You just copy and paste a short Javascript into your HTML where you'd like current electronica news to show up. (We've included the easy instructions below.) Then, when your page is brought up, the Javascript delivers the latest news directly to your site's visitors.
RSS News Feeds - RSS is a standard format for syndicating news. There are several RSS feeds available.
RSS feeds can be incorporated into your website using web server scripting. This is easy, if you know a little about PHP or Perl. This also gives you complete flexibility in how you format the news.

JavaScript Syndication

Synthtopia is delivering headlines in two formats using Javascript:

Tall sidebar table - These are convenient to put at the left or right side of your pages. You can preview the current headlines on the column headline test page.

It's really easy to add this to your page. Just add this code where you'd like the headlines to appear:

That's it! When you load your page, the latest headlines should appear.

Long freeflowing table - This is lets you put headlines anywhere you like, and the table will flow to fit your space. You can preview this on the flowing table test page.

Formatting

The news feeds come without special formatting. If you want to, you can customize the way that they look using three Cascading Style Sheet classes that are embedded in the feed.

synthtopiaTable: This lets you customize the format of the table.
synthtopiaTitle: This lets you customize the way the headline titles look.
synthtopiaTitleLink: This lets you customize the way the links look.
synthtopiaTeaser: This lets you format the body of the summary or "teaser" copy.

RSS Syndication

RSS syndication requires that you use some form of web server scripting to convert the news feed into HTML and incorporate it into your pages. This is pretty easy to do, but you'll know a little about Perl or PHP. There is an introduction to using RSS news feeds at IBM's site.

Where's the fine print?

This service is free, and we've done everything possible to make it easy and painless for you. Here's a couple of things to keep in mind.

Use of the Synthtopia news feeds doesn't create a joint venture, partnership, or any other business relationship between you and Synthtopia. We make the feeds public, and you can use them if you want to.
Synthtopia maintains very high availability, but we don't guarantee either 100% availability, or the suitability of the javascript or headlines to meet your needs.
Synthtopia may make changes to this service at any point in time.

The bottom line for you is that you get the service for free, and if you don't like it, you can delete the one line of Javascript easily.
