Free Windows Music Software: Artifake_Labs has introduced a free software synthesizer, RedTron_MKV, that emulates the Mellotron MKV (essentially a double M400), one of the rarest Mellotrons ever made.
Features :
- Realistic user interface.
- Six sound types : 3 Violins, 8-Voice Choir, Flute, Brass, String Section, Cello.
- “Loop” and “Non-Loop” modes : as the original “Mellotron”, each sound is eight seconds long but you can switch to “Loop Mode” and allows the samples to loop continuously.
- Layer possibilities & independent parameters for layer A & B:
- Volume, Tone, Reverb, Delay, Pan, Octave, Note & Attack parameters.
- Delay effect (Amount, Time, Feedback & Pan parameters).
- Reverb effect (Mix, Width, Size & Damp parameters).
- Pitch control
- Can be used as Soundfont Player to mix any .sf2 file with “Tron sounds” or to extend the sound palette.

I think its fantastic, the amount of free resources available, not only instrument plug-ins but recording software and open use samples, allowing literally anyone with a computer to record, mix and produce music.
How do I install this on Windows 7? Is this a stand-alone app or does it need a host to plug into? I usually use Mac and I'm using windows 7 on VMware on an iMac. It comes as a dll file. Does this need an app to unpack it? Please help.

If it is a dll. it will need a host app. like Cubase or other. Copy the dll. file to your VST plugins
folder, The host will find it and list it in the VST instrument menu.

A good mellotron plugin, but it has one big flaw. It doesn’t save the settings when used in a DAW. Instead it reverts to the firs preset, which is pretty hopeless.
