iPad Music Software: Line 6 sends word that the MIDI Mobilizer, a MIDI interface for Apple iPod touch, iPhone and iPad, is now officially supported by 12 apps.
MIDI Mobilizer connects directly with any Apple iPod touch, iPhone or iPad and, coupled with MIDI Memo Recorder (a free app available for download on the Apple App Store), allows musicians to play, record, and backup MIDI data.
Sonic State’s look at the MIDI Mobilizer highlighted the devices potential, much of which is just now being realized.
In addition to MIDI Memo Recorder, these apps are compatible with MIDI Mobilizer:
- NanoStudio
- NLogSynth Pro
- NLog MIDI Synth
- Music Studio
- Pianist Pro
- StepPolyArp
- MIDI Surface
- Little MIDI Machine
- MIDI Live
- bs-16i
- S1MIDI Trigger.
“Developers are doing an amazing job of harnessing the power of the Apple devices and turning them into serious music-making MIDI machines,” says Line 6’s Chris Grigg.
In addition to the apps above, over 70 app developers are working on new apps that will support MIDI Mobilizer.
MIDI Mobilizer has an estimated street price of $69.99.
Now were talking! I'm really looking forward to using my iPhone as a portable synth driven from MIDI controller so I'm really glad Line 6 is getting some momentum
But I wonder, does the midi mobilizer really matter, now, with coremidi? If we can connect the ipad using the camera-connector usb adapter and other *existing* usb-midi interfaces, why buy a midi-interface that works only with the ipad?
Hi Will,
I think CoreMIDI assumes you are using a computer as the connection is made through the iphone/ipad via USB or WIFI right? If so, the value in Line 6 is no computer is required so I can go on the road with my Tenori-On and iPhone as a sound module.

Yeah, seriously. I want core midi support for these apps.
With iOS 4.2.1 (on iPad) all you need is iPad camera connection kit and and class compliant midi interface or controller – there in no need to use computer 😉
Line 6 Midi Mobilizer however is still needed for iPhones since they don't work with camera connection kit.
I would love to see an app that is midi pattern queue player similar to the MMT8 or Grooveboxes.
Yes I forgot that CoreMIDI didn’t make the Mobilizer obsolete because the iPhone cant do USB! hahahaha!
Is this guy too slow, or am I too fast?
I use midi mobilizer it on the iphone 3gs as a music "note taking" application. Haven't tried it on ipad yet.
