This is a brief tour of TONTO – The Original New Timbral Orchestra.
In addition to being one of the greatest monster synths of all time, TONTO has an important place in the history of electronic music, appearing on seminal electronic music albums by Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff‘s Tonto’s Expanding Head Band; appearing in films, like Phantom of the Paradise; helping Stevie Wonder create some of his most important albums in the 70’s; and making appearances on many other recordings.
TONTO was designed and built by Cecil, and features:
- 2 Moog Series III Modular Synthesizers
- 2 Arp 2600s
- Serge Modules
- 4 Oberheim SEMs
And that’s just the start of it.
Watch and weep.
Note: Cecil will be performing with the portable version of TONTO in June at the World Monuments Fund Gallery co-presented by The Analog Lab in New York City .
