Developer Don Turnock has released Odyssey for VCV Rack, a free, multi-platform software modular synthesizer.
Turnock describes Odyssey for VCV Rack as ‘an Arp Odyssey on steroids’.
Here’s what he has to say about it:
“It is very close in most ways, I owned 2 different Oddys back in the day.
The oscillators are a bit ballsier than arps, but filtered back a bit they are very close. the HPF can thin them a bit also.. Adding the third VCO was a tribute to the MiniMoog. I was going to make the 3rd osc go between audio and LFO, then decided to add a 3rd audio VCO, so you would always have the LFo for modulation.
The the filter seems to be halfway between the 2nd and 3rd version. It is all around pretty close. The over patching available is as close as I could get. In the end it is what I would mod an Oddy to sound like.”
It’s available as a free download, in versions for Linux, Mac & Windows.
On steroids huh? So it’s a softsynth that has self esteem issues, systematically cheats in everything, has low sexual function, and intermittently lashes out in hormonal rage?
you forgot tiny balls. Though I like VCV a lot.
Yeah, not hating on VCV. I just think the “on steroids” parable is weird if you really think about it.
Thank you! This is what I was hoping to see with VCV — open source recreations of well-known existing synths. I’d love to find more VCV patches that recreate some of the best synth modules from history….
I appreciate the beefed-up aspects that come from your time as a previous Oddy owner. Some softsynths feel more like their elders than others, which I attribute to the % of the programmer’s hands-on time with the hardware. My time with early monos involved fun real-time sweat. No presets for a long time, remember. I encourage love of the sounds themselves, but make sure you have a controller you can really lay into. That’s when they speak up and sound more like You. Nice work, Don.
love it! great work.
I’m having trouble getting this to run. I used SAVIhost to load the program, but it didn’t work. The only dll file I could see in the download is simply called Plugin. Is that the file to be loaded? Many thanks.
