Electro-Harmonix has introduced the Bass Mono Synth, a pedal that transforms your bass into one of eleven synth sounds.

Its intuitive layout makes it easy to use and easy to dial in good sounds quickly. DRY controls the volume of your dry bass signal at the Synth Output. SYNTH controls the volume of the Synthesizer sound at the Synth Output. Used together they let you create just the right mix. The SENS control, short for sensitivity, adjusts how your playing dynamics trigger the synthesizer and allows you to fine tune the way the pedal responds to your bass rig and playing style.
With the CTRL knob you can adjust a key parameter for each of the eleven synth types. It varies depending on the preset and provides more tweakability for customizing your sound. There’s also an EXP input which lets you control an entirely different parameter in real-time with an expression pedal!
Using the built-in Preset footswitch, a user customizable preset for each of the eleven synth sounds can be created, saved and recalled. The factory presets are also easy to restore should you wish to.

ha I love the BOC on synthbass. EHX pedals are always so expensive but I would love one of these (no price yet on the site) especially since I just got back and rebuilt my bass that someone though they were going to do something cool to when i let them borrow it years ago.

Personally I never quite get synth bass pedals like this. The electric bass alone can be such an expressive instrument, but these pedals often only sound almost as good as a keyboard player would sound. When thundercat plays with a synth pedal it sounds to me like an intrusive special effect rather than something brilliantly musical.
It doesn’t have to be that way, e.g. wind controllers are not just synths for people who can’t play keyboard, they can be beautiful and expressive in different ways. Can bass pedals also be more expressive than keyboard bass?
As an old bassist who just bought one and found it tracks beautifully, once a bit of a learning curve has been surmounted regarding attack, dynamics and sensitivity, all I can say is … ahhhhh, sweet revenge. First keyboardists and producers made all of us have to go out and get a low-B 5-string bass to cover the extended range of ubiquitous keyboard bass back in the ’80s, then everyone got hooked on the synthy sounds in new wave bass tracks. This is a very period-specific pedal when it comes to sounds, but it very cleanly nails that aesthetic. The brilliance of this particular pedal is in the blending option of dry with wet — and now it sounds like two doubled tracks, with all the original low end. Brilliant.
