In this video, German synthesist Hainbach explores the hidden world of electro-magnetic fields.
Hainbach takes the SOMA Ether electro-magnetic field microphone for a spin in Berlin, uncovering hidden sounds from streets, subways and zeppelins.
The recording was done directly from the SOMA Ether into a Sony PCM-D100.
Really a zeppelin? So much for the inverse square law.
Christina Kubisch came up with this concept 15 years ago, and it’s still fresh!: http://www.christinakubisch.de/en/works/electrical_walks
There’s a trove of sound artists who’ve created truly innovative and captivating pieces using often very basic technology since the 1960’s: Kubisch, Alvin Lucier, Maryanne Amacher, Max Neuhaus, Phill Niblock, CM von Hausswolff…
They should be featured more often on this blog!
I love Hainbach. His videos are great. Very adventurous, experimental spirit.
is it also getting sounds of the recording device, or is that shielded?
Maybe email Soma Lab and get the definitive answer? Everything here will be speculative.
It sounds to me that the device is actually re-synthesizing the sound of electromagnetic fields.
