West coast synthesist Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith has released a new album, The Mosaic of Transformation, that’s inspired by improvisation and dance.
“I guess in one sentence, this album is my expression of love and appreciation for electricity,” says Smith.
While writing and recording, she embraced a daily practice of physical movement, passing electricity through her body and into motion, in ways reflecting her audio practice, which sends currents through modular synthesizers and into the air through speakers.
“My movement practice has been a constant transformation piece by piece. I made this album in the same way. Every day I would transform what I did yesterday…into something else. This album has gone through about 12 different versions of itself.”

Not a bad little ditty on the black keys, sounds like Japan at times
But generally underwhelmed with over rated female electronic music artists.
I’m not being mean, I’m just being honest !
No, you weren’t being mean or honest, you were being a misogynist. There are over-rated musicians, under-rated musicians, and musicians who deserve whatever ‘rating’ they get. The fact that you felt it necessary to specify ‘female’ demonstrates nothing more than your discomfort with women in the world of electronic music.
This particular example is not at all over-rated. You just happen to dislike the specific sub-genre or you are so absorbed by your hatred for women that you can’t even open your ears and listen objectively. Or both.
Kaitlyn Aurelia Smiths last two albums were a discovery for me. One of the rare artists I know who uses modular systems in a very playfully and extended way and obviously you can hear her composition skills as she studied composition. Not my opinion, it’s a fact that sometimes you can’t judge an artists or understand an artwork if you experienced only a excerpt of his oeuvre.
Btw the cover artwork is stunning
