October 2022 marks the 20th anniversary of synth pioneer Dave Smith’s return to hardware synthesizers with the introduction of the Dave Smith Evolver synthesizer, a synth that was described as “a wickedly powerful synergy of analog and digital.”
Since the Evolver’s introduction in 2002, the Dave Smith Instruments has evolved into Sequential, and the the company has released a steady stream of fantastic instruments, including Tempest, Prophet-6, Prophet Rev2, and the recent collaboration with Tom Oberheim, the OB-X8.
To celebrate the 20 year anniversary, Sequential shared Designers talk: OB-X8, and how it came to be – a conversation with the creators of the OB-X8, including Tom Oberheim, the late Dave Smith, Marcus Ryle and Tony Karavidas.
The video showcases how much experience the four brought to the design of the OB-X8, and how the instrument was a labor of love.
and poly evolver rack, prophet 12 desktop…
Years ago, I wanted a brand new Prophet 12 keyboard. That was my dream synth.
Never got one and never will.
Mmmmmm. Love my Tempest. It’s quirky, but once you really learn it it’s so good.
How surreal and sad that Dave is sitting there in seemingly good health and spirit, saying “we’re just starting” — and two months later he passes away.
