Organizers of ContinuuCon 2023, an international expressive instrument conference that focuses on the Haken Continuum and other EaganMatrix Instruments, have announced that this year’s conference will be held May 17–19 in Palmela, Portugal.
Previous Continuum conferences have been held at IRCAM in Paris and in Asheville, North Carolina.
The focus of this year’s conference is expanding to include all electronic musical instruments that feature the Continuum’s internal sound engine, the EaganMatrix. This includes:
- The new Expressive E Osmose synthesizer;
- The Continuum Fingerboard;
- The ContinuuMini; and
- The EaganMatrix Module for Eurorack modular systems.
As in previous years, the conference offers attendees a chance to explore these uniquely expressive electronic instruments through presentations, performances, and hands-on experience.
ContinuuCon 2023 is timed to start on May 17th, four days after Superbooth ends in Berlin. This will make it possible for musicians to extend their European trip and experience both the latest in electronic music gear and the state-of-the-art in expressive electronic instruments.
Over the following two days, Continuum and Osmose experts and master musicians will present lectures and demos at the Palmela Public Library.
University of Illinois professor Dr. Lippold Haken and Canadian film and TV composer Edmund Eagan – developers of the EaganMatrix and the Continuum family of instruments – will be on hand throughout the event, along with Expressive E and other experts on expressive instruments.
Haken Continuum players include Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi, Brazilian electro-acoustic musician Amon Tobin, film composer A.R. Rahman, Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess, and The Who’s Pete Townshend. “I absolutely adore it,” explains Townshend. “The Continuum is already inspiring me to new ideas.”

hm, its kind of interesting, we have completed the circle now.
first it was a big no no to play synthetic sound with a keyboard if you wanted to be cool …
now, the paradigm has changed, its do “everything” with the keyboard.
you kind of started the history of keyboard a little late in the game… i like keyboard, it comes on every keyboard I buy, with no additional wires attached! lol.
Im on about east vs. west coast interfaces on synthesizers. 😉
if its not the Moog school of sound playing black and white keys was seen as “traditional, conservative, unexpressive and uncool”.
You can still hear the echos of that ever time some idiot talks about the keyboard as on and off keys …
oh that stuff. i’m a traditionalist. my ears like equal and well temperament, and my fingers like full size keyboards. if i had space for a baby grand, I would probably have that instead. but it won’t fit up the staircase.
oddly the obsession seems to be to play cello on a keyboard …
lets see how this spreads and what other ppl do with it.

the roli stuff comes with wonderful layered sounds … the eagan matrix does not sound that impressive.
I get the impression its better to have a “diffusion” (lol) to connect to the osmose to make the sound.
that makes it a very expensive controller.
and it looks like you can only record the audio out of anything MPE because you really dont want to edit all the data that falls out of an mpe interface …
puh, what to say?

IF – they become more affordable.
The Osmose is breaking down some price barriers with high res multi-dimensional control. Pretty affordable for what you get.
hope someone brings an ewi5000 playing u-he zebra with a dbinstruments xy pedal. doesn’t get more expressive than that.
