The Korg SV-1 Stage Piano

korg-sv-1-stage-piano

Sneak Preview: The Korg SV-1 Stage Piano is a new keyboard focusing on piano and electric piano sounds. Or in Googlish:

Following stage piano, Korg SV-1. Vintage, made in Retoromodan theme, even Retorofyucharisutikku the 60’s design is guaranteed to be shined on stage and feel.

If that’s what “Retoromodan” looks like, I want to get me some.

The Korg SV-1 Stage Piano will be available in 73 & 88 key versions. Synth features like mod wheels, split functions and ADSR envelopes were apparently eliminated from the Korg SV-1 design, with the focus instead being on top notch piano sounds.

We’ll have specs and pricing on the Korg SV-1 Stage Piano as they are made available.

    1. Well. Just got mine yesterday. Ok: it is red. Comparisons stop here! The shape is actually WAY groovier, notwithstanding the PRICE! I mean, the organs are not parametable, thus the downside, but the nord's rhodes and wurlys PROSTERNATE before the SV-1. The way it is designed is just perfect, every parameter is intuitive, and answers most giggin musicians' need. It definitely answers the similar needs than the Nord Stage, I concede. But I left with mine for 2100$, tx included. So, here you go. If you're not an organ or synth freak, that's a HELL of a cool keyboard!

  1. That's just it! The Japanese find it extremely difficult to pronounce a"T" followed by an "R", and so on. Thus "Korg" is pronounced "Korogo". So yeah, "retromodern" and "retrofuturistic" it is… But whatever thay may call it, I'd say the proof will be in the playing, not the name they give it!!!

  2. That's a really nice looking instrument. The angle of the controll panel seems quite practical too. Don't know if it's the same practical when you have another Keyboard on top.

Surely it seems like a copy of clavia's Nord Stage or Nord electro, but can't tell if it's worse or better until I play on it. There's already a handycap compared to clavia's instruments. It lacks the drawbars for the organ section.

It's good to see competition in retro sound instruments. It can only get better and CHEAPER for all of us who buy them!

  3. I just got myself one and its pretty cool. The piano sounds are pretty excellent as are the fx modules, although the Organ sounds are pretty un-necessary

  4. All of the words beginning 'ret' in the above description make it all the more salivacious (is THAT a word!), I stumbled upon one of these fine models in a music store the other day….just ten minutes of tinkering on it had me more inspired than I've ever been on any of the rolands/yamahas or others charging the same price. It is might Fiiiine!!! I want me some SV-1!

  6. I'm really interested in the 73 for gigging. It would be nice to have a smaller than 88 key, but still have the piano action feel. I'm also interested in the fact that it has great electric piano sounds, (Rhodes, & Wurlies mainly) and has knobs and buttons to control, not stupid LCD screens with endless menus! This is a true live performer's keyboard and not for "making beats". I have yet to play on one and have never been a fan of most of Korg's stuff, (I'm using a Roland XV-88 for my main board when performing), but it's gotta have a better acoustic and electric piano sound than the dreadful Nord board. I just hope it is not too heavy! (My back is killing me!)

  8. Would be curious to read an indepth side by side comparison of the SV-1 and Nord 3. Does anyone know where I can read one?
Played the Sv1 and did not want to leave the store. I think it beats Nord on several fronts – the most important being that most of the sounds are much better. I think the Nord wins on the organ with it's draw bars, but SV1 has awesome organ sounds too. Also, if you want killer piano, rhodes, wurlitzer and clav sounds, the SV1 wins hands down. It has fully weighted keys which I like, easy knobs instead of digital menus, layers of killer effects and a tube!!

  10. I tried a sv-1 in a music shop just before Christmas and loved it. Fantastic sound and the key action was the best I’ve tried. The Nord has more spec but if you want great sounds, top key touch and easy to use package, try the korg.

  11. I've had one for a month. Knocks the Nord Electro flat out. Better keyboard, better acoustic pianos and an excellent Rhodes sound. If you're not looking for particularly good strings/organs, there's no contest.

  14. I sold my Korg SV 1 73 today at a place that buys musical gear wholesale (translate cheap). I was deeply disappointed with the SV1 and will probably never buy another Korg product because of it. First, whoever designed this should be fired. They put auto off button right on top of a black key. I was playing at a gig – doing a solo – when I accidentally hit the thing and the entire keyboard went mute!! I had to read the manual to find out what went wrong and use my Nord to finish the set. While some keyboards are a cinch to amplify, the SV1 is not. The acoustic pianos, while at first pleasing, do not cut thru a band mix or band situation. You have to constantly EQ them in order to be heard properly. EQ should be the flavoring on the cake not the entire cake. Bottom line: this thing is a complete dud. Don't be deceived by the BS advertising and high price. If you want something much better get a Nord Electro 3.

  15. As an addendum to my complete disappointment with the Korg SV 1 73 which I sold today (thankfully) I wanted to add that the organs are absolutely horrible, especially considering the fact that Korg makes the CX3 which is excellent. Also, the SV 1 is very heavy for a 73 key keyboard; the Nord electro 73 is about 20 lbs.
Also, whoever said the electric pianos on the Nord are bad should apply to Medicare for a hearing aid. Either that, or they never had a real electric piano (I have a '76 Rhodes Suitcase and a '79 Wurlitzer 200a). What's bad on the Nord is the acoustic pianos. They plain suck. The organs, electric pianos, clav, and most of the samples on the Electro 3 are excellent , however, and will cut thru any band mix perfectly. I have one. With the Nord you need a good acoustic piano alternative. Definitely NOT the Korg SV1. There's nothing good about this thing.

  29. Late in the discussion, but just wanted to say I have been completely impressed with my experience of the SV-1. I own the 73 note version and it just slays.

They've updated the editor software (thankfully) to include the option of creating splits and layered sounds–something which was curiously missing at first, but now it's solid.

All the tones sound excellent–organs included. Drawback of the organs of course is that there is no live control (you can edit them in software). I don't play any organs anyways, so it doesn't affect me personally, but it's a little odd either way. I'd personally pick Roland's V-Combo for organ control.

Doesn't have a mod-wheel as well–I guess it's not needed for pianos, but they sure are fun.

Tonally, it kills any Nord I've played through and through. The amplifier modeling also adds a total extra dimension to each sound (strings with amplifier model 2…ooooh baby)–sounds excellent.

Overall, I dig it a lot.
