Free Omnisphere Patches From Jordan Rudess

Free Music Software: Spectrasonics has released a collection of multi-patches for Omnisphere, created by Jordan Rudess.

In the video, Rudess demos his Trilian and Omnisphere patches at NAMM 2010.

  12. While I don't doubt his skills, the music he's involved is smalchtzy, overly-technical-close-to-masturbation cack that I can't just stand. Lifeless and boring. Comparing to what is happening to electronic music all around the world, this is just plain outdated. It's stuff like that in the 70's that caused the whole punk rock to be born.

  17. compared to the doom guitar riff he plays in the beginning, actually 90% of electronic music I know sounds lifeless and boring. But that's a matter of taste. I don't like the chapman stick sound, and I don't like Dream Theatre neither, but I wonder why this "masturbation" metapher automatically pops up as soon as someone can perform with virtuosity… Can you imagine that maybe he doesn't care at all if someone admires him for playing fast? Might be that he just loves making music?

  19. There is nothing closer to masturbation than most electronic music made by guys alone in front of a computer screen with a mouse while they stroke their chins. The punch line here is that you accuse Ruddess of being "overly technical" when he at least uses his own hands to play. Now that I think of it, maybe that's where the masturbation image came from…

  22. Man does not live by 64th notes alone. When he leaves some air between them, I enjoy his playing a lot more. All tension and no release give my ears blue balls.

  23. It's just as you said, it's a matter of taste. The "mastrubation" metaphor pops up as soon as some people, like me, see somebody, who's doing something musically irrelevant in a very technical manner i guess, just for their own pleasure. That especially applies,in my opinion, to Mr.Rudess, because every single time I watch his videos of doing,dunno, some crazy "face melting synth jam" it just sounds, like being back in the 70s and the whole prog rock biz is happening again – cheesy sounds, lifeless melodies and so on. His virtuosity is unmatched, fair enough, but I'd rather listen to somebody, who can't play half as good as him, but has a sense of purpose, feelings injected into their music.Not just a showdown of skills.

But I don't see why playing strings on keys should be any more acceptable than playing guitar, and there is a respectable lineage of one trick string synths, isn't there?

  29. I suppose the wanking metaphor comes from the demonstration of the capacity to produce something amazing combined with the knowledge that the capacity is going, erm, nowhere. But, y'know, it's a demo. And the guy has talent and passion and deserves a break. In 3/8 time ;p

  31. What's with the negativity here?

    He's demoing the gear, not doing a gig. It's a very different musical context. His playing is for the purpose of displaying the richness of the sounds, rather than communicating his own musical narratives.

    I happen to like the kinds of things he plays and don't like much of the stuff I hear around, but then I'm an old fart.

    Lighten up people. He's a positive and very musical guy. Good for him.

  33. have you listened to the piano sections of any of his work? plenty of space and aire used. the keyboard solo from the "metropolis" dvd shows that he can blend virtuosity (and wank) with sensible well composed, music filled with aire. he also breaks outside of the normal "rhythm boxes" that many (even electronic) musicians live by
