I love these films, it's a fascinating effect. It's interesting to note that the scenes that don't look convincingly like a model are the ones where the movement is just real and organic. For example any scene where you see people moving in detail.

Errm, my mind is officially blown. Is this models (nah, too complicated), real film (nah, looks too stilted and modelled) or both? Or just an optical illusion? It's brilliant.

Mirlitron: its an effect called "tilt shift". This looks like its been done in post but the effect is to soften the focus of the fore and background, added with the speeding up of the timelapse creates a nice effect.
you can find more videos with the same effect here: http://vimeo.com/videos/search:tilt%20shift

So it's all 'real', then? Even the lapping water?

Yeah – it's an insane effect. It makes things look like a model train set.
