Producers of the modular synthesizer documentary I Dream Of WIres have released this in-depth interview with synthesist Richard Lainhart, who died Dec 30th, 2011.
Lainhart sat down with director Robert Fantinatto last summer to discuss electronic music, modular synthesizers and his approach to making music. The documentary is currently in production, but the filmmakers posted Lainhart’s full-length interview to give people more insight into him and his music.
For more information about Richard Lainhart:
The way this man intelligently speaks about electronic music, modular synthesizers, Moog, Buchla, it’s so fascinating. It makes me feel way more intelligent and noble in my own pursuit to understand it all, and less of an obsessive compulsion. Some people seek to collect baseball cards, or know all there is the know about American war history, for example. Me, I am completely intrigued by the combination of music, science, and that intangible organic spontaneity.
I didn’t know who this guy was before, but I’ll definitely pay my respects by looking up his work and giving it a listen. RIP.

i agree to what the person above me said.
i get the feeling that mr. lainhard could talk forever about synthesizers. there just seemed to be this crushing body of knowledge in his voice and eyes about the essential meaning of what it means to use a synth.
very cool video
The saddest part, for me, was knowing that he’ll never be able to finish all those projects and performances he had planned in the coming weeks. Time is fleeting; if it’s important to you, do it now.
I Dream Of WIres is a important documentary.
Richard Lainhart lives on and has inspired me
