Moog Music is dribbling out a steady series of teasers for the new Sub Phatty synthesizer, which they will be officially releasing at the 2013 NAMM Show.
While the Sub Phatty looked pretty interesting naked and sounded pretty good in as a prototype (below), we’re looking forward to finding out official specs, pricing and availability.
Features of the Sub Phatty are expected to include:
- Two stable oscillators
- A suboscillator
- Noise generator
- Twin ADSRs envelope generators
- Multidrive circuit
- Traditional Moog VCF
- 25-note keyboard
- Pitch bend & mod wheels
- Patch memory
We’ll have more information next week.
Wow, presets, noise and it looks like sync on the previously released picture. Despite having a 2 octave keyboard Moog may finally have a modern synth that I will have to buy. But I’m guessing $1300 or so. Not a deal breaker. If it is less than $800, I won’t have a choice.
Am I the only one not being wowed by these specs? If the price tag is right, this could be one heck of a budget synth, but nothing so far seems like its way better than the original Little Phatty. It’s not looking bad by any means… It just seems kinda vanilla so far.
I’m hoping Moog is saving the best features for last.
It’s not like they are exactly re-inventing the wheel , but so far this seems to be filling in what I thought were gaping holes in their line up. This seems to be shaping up to be new Moog Source without the silly membrane controls. It would be nice if it were less than the LP (and didn’t have that absolutely P part of the name) but I don’t see how that can happen. I would LOVE to be wrong about this. I love my old Moog but can’t see myself ever gigging it. And it is a bit limited, but what it does I love.
But at the end of the day, this is just another iteration of the Moog architecture, which I happen to love.
It looks like it has more knobs than the little phatty. It could have very similar guts, but with the layout geared more toward hands-on control and less toward presets.
I hope its SUB $1000 🙂
I LOVE HOW EXCITED HE IS.
😀
With a 2 octave keyboard my feeling is this is the minibrute killer from moog and as such will cost $900 or less. The little phatty has fewer knobs but they all do quintuple duty making for a very complicated architecture to keep it all analog and allow for presets. Whereas the sub phatty appears to be the $600 minatour with a keyboard and a couple more knobs. I think arturia caught everyone with their pants down and this is a bit of catchup with a second oscillator to sweeten the deal on the higher price. Plus it’s a moog.
I think your spot on. It is looking kinda like the Minataur with more knobs and a keyboard. Let’s hope you’re right about that 900 price. I’m hoping they put a decent LFO on it and maybe some other surprise bells and whistles. Though if it’s truly a Moog under 1k, I can’t imagine they’d do too much more than the basics.
That sounds like a minitaur killer… I can’t see Moog making their own synth redundant after a year. I reckon it’ll cost more than a LP. Hope I’m wrong!
i still think it will be $1300-$1500. I hope I’m wrong….. maybe by posting this, I will be. jinx!
I hope, really hope, it sounds a fat as the MiniTaur. The MiniTaur sounds so much better than the Phatty.
For me, I hope that it has the same feature as the Minitaur; full parameter MIDI control. If it does, I would be interrested in this maybe.
But if it has presets I’m 99% certain it will be as with the Minitaur having NRPN and SysEx function, because if it can store a preset, it has to have a digital representation of the parameters that it can control digitaly back again, and should allow for MIDI control also then.
I’m crossing my fingers for that… and that a rack/desktop model will be available.
It would be a big misstep for moog to price this over $1k. I believe they’ll surprise us a little. In a good way.
I don’t know….for me it’s look like it’s 4bank X 4preset..no digital screen. wait and see
They wouldn’t be wasting so much panel space on all those buttons if it had any sort of display….
Indeed they wouldn’t, but you can get to any sound within two button pushes. i mean, when you dial in a sound that you just have to have ,presets are great! Most likely you only find “that” sound when you don’t have patch recall though. I think they failed on that whole deal there. could have easily knocked off 800 from the price.. whatever, this thing is going to be expensive! budget moog my a$s..
I don’t like the fact it has presets, I was hoping for a mini-minimoog…..
It’s going cost a lot more than a Little Phatty, it has more knobs and a better front panel, £1500-£1800 GBP I’m guessing….
$999!
$666!
$ 799 !
Yeah, with more knobs and a sub oscillator, it seems likely that it’ll cost more than the Little Phatty, which wouldn’t really be competition for the Minibrute.
To me it looks like the label on the button in the lower right corner was purposely obscured. Can anyone make it out? Looks like “Activate Panel” to me. Hmmmm…
It’s just the depth if field of the lens, nothing deliberate. ‘Activate Panel’ will just take you back out of a preset to the live panel so the knob positions reflect the actual sound. Same as ‘manual’ on most synths like JP8 and JP4 etc.
$1100.
They may have set out to compete with the minibrute but this is way more and the price will be too. You also can’t call something the ‘Sub’ Phatty not not place it in your range beneath the LP. Minimum price $1000.
I also thought that, but I think sub title is referring to the sub oscillator only. It could very well exceed the Little Phatty in functionality and price. Then again, they could’ve called it the Mega Phatty or something if it were more powerful. Tough call.
Fair point, and indeed it does seem to be more desirable a synth than the LP, to me anyway, so could very well be more expensive. But is a sub oscillator enough to influence a name? We’ll find out soon enough I suppose.
I think they’ll keep the price relatively low but sell optional cards (extensions) for “USB control” or CV-gate, or even patch memory
I think that might be wishful thinking.
$999, if we’re lucky.
While I think it’s obvious that Moog sees the competition building momentum with their analog offerings at consumer-friendly prices, I tend to believe that the MiniTaur WAS their answer to the “affordable analog” swing. I’d be shocked if they weren’t at least *somewhat* aware of the market trend at the beginning of last year when they released the MiniTaur. (as if the successes of monotron, monotribe, mopho, tetra, and the *seeming* explosion of small DIY synth sales taking place online weren’t enough of a forecast)
But I just don’t think they’d want to dive into MiniBrute’s pool with something like this. Moog will continue to compete against other ‘top-shelf’ analog & VA designers like Access, Dave Smith, Elektron, etc… and even Arturia’s origin. This I believe despite the fact that I think Moog could very well decide to shift their pricing structure a little bit, and indeed THAT would have much more of an effect on the synth market than Arturia’s one hit affordable analog mono synth.
I’ve often wondered, how many Voyagers do they actually sell? Probably a fair few at one point, but now? I’d say they don’t move so quickly anymore and I think the retiring of the Select Series is evidence of that. Not enough sales to justify the choices.
I really think Moogs bread and butter are the Moogfoogers, LP etc and whilst they may have traded (justifyibly) on being a premium brand the Minibrute has identified a slot in the market that I don’t think even the Minitaur filled – a cheap knobby keyboard synth that sounds great.
So I do think the original intention of the Sub Phatty was to make a minibrute beater (why else have such a short keyboard?) with a few extras like limited patch memory and an extra osc to sweeten the deal, I think the end result it way beyond the Minibrute and the price will be too. No doubt of that.
I’d really love to think this will be “Sub” $1000 but its looking more and more unlikely. Indeed the possibility that it may even be above the LP in the range seems plausible, but that little 2 octave keyboard does suggest otherwise.
I’m hoping its below 1k, but I doubt it. Maybe a desktop version will be released later this year?
correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t the LP have the same number of keys? If the keybed were the evidence of a “MiniBrute Killer” then they’d have had one for years now.
Yes, your wrong. Sub has 25 keys, LP has 37.
thank you. I suppose I could have just looked it up, but time is of the essence, and I’ve got a Lemur template to script.
Or you could have read the spec, which would have been even quicker, its at the top of this page. ????
For some reason a smiley wink face I inserted in post above came out as ‘????’. I’ll try again – 😉
haha, no no, I would’ve had to look up the Little Phatty specs. I’ve never spent much time on the little phatty, and when I did it was more than 3 years ago. During my “dark” period… a time I’d attempted to repress from memory completely.
At any rate, is NAMM started yet? I’m tired of speculation. I got enough of that last november.
Had a LP for 3 weeks. Found it sterile and uninspiring so sold it. However I’m curious about this.

I hate to end the price speculation, but it looks like it will be $999, according to Musician’s Friend.
Jrr shop is listing the sub phatty at $999!!!
