Sunday Synth Jam: Here’s another live looping synth jam by Rheyne, Live Jam #84.
Technical Details:
Live looping with analog keyboards, USB controllers, iOS devices, and Ableton Live. All loops are recorded live, nothing was pre-recorded. Visuals are from Nullsoft Winamp’s “Milkdrop” running on a PC. WinAmp reacts to audio input, so audio from a mixer is being sent into the line-in on the PC.
Equipment:
- DJ TechTools MF3D
- DSI MoPho
- Akai APC20
- M-Audio Oxygen25
- iConnectMIDI
- KMI QuNeo, QuNexus, and 12-Step
- Fender Rhodes w/ MXR Wylde Overdrive
- Moog Prodigy
- Novation Launchpad
- iPad running Lemur
- iPod Touch running Sunrizer
- PreSonus 1818VSL
- MacBook Pro running Ableton Live
- PC running WinAmp
You can download or stream the audio at SoundCloud.
For a minute there I thought I heard something I’d never heard before, but quickly realized that it was a pair of quarelling catbirds in the tree above me.
hahahahaha
Sorry about the spelling of “quarrelling”. I should have said “fighting” which I can spell. Lol!
Cheesy music is cheesy. That’s about everything I have to say about this guy. He has great gear but this cheesy music … ew
Oh and year 1999 called, they want their shitty winamp animations back !

So I can’t do any kind of comment regarding the work of this man if I don’t have myself a million view on youtube ? Is that it ? I can criticize film even though I don’t produce some on sundays, I can say this book is good or not even if I don’t have like written twelve myself. How is it different ? Please also note that I criticize the genre of music and not the guy himself. I’m sure Rheyne is a great guy, just by seeing the gear he’s got.

Anonymous snarky comments are indeed superfluous. When you comment on the interweb in a way that you would never speak to a person in real life, you kill the creator’s creativity and perhaps also that of not so brave enough people to post a video on Youtube because of cynicism. Constructive criticism is always preferred, no matter how bad you think it is. Or let me rephrase this: What did you do today?
+1
This kind of music tends to be “cheesy”, so I’d say his track is spot-on, in a positive sense. I mean, listen to Ulrich Schnauss’ music. His music is “cheesy” as [w/h]ell, but he’s successful.
Rheyne’s jams are a evolution of gear and technique
Cheesy music is ” the chicken dance ” and i only wish i could be that cheesy
Oops! Didn’t mean to start a fight. But lay off cheese, will ya? I just grilled up a plate of imported Asiago with a ragu that was stunning! Let’s just call this video “prosciutto-like”, something I’m not a fan of…
I agree about the bad music. You can have all the gear in the world and not be creative. Check out a guy named Teebs,he uses fruity loops and an sp404 and his music is the most beautiful thing you’ve ever heard…
Oh, now we’ve upped the ante! Let’s all check out Clams Casino’s Instrumentals, Instrumentals 2 and Rainforest EP. Technology used: an old H-P desktop, Sony Acid and a cable modem.
Regardless of the comments by Lady GaGa above, I enjoyed the video. We’ve got Catbirds here also. They are tone deaf and usually listen to Streisand. Thanks for the post.
Nice music, but half the gear on that list doesn’t seem to get used at all… less is more!
Make music. Have fun. That is all.
Relaxing and inspirational music.
I like Rheyne’s work because it ebbs and flows. Its not monotonous, lockstepped dance nor is it just ambient goo. Its a more mature form of ambient, with nice melodic movement that gives it character. Give the guy some credit.
i liked it
one man’s cheese is another man’s poison?
relax!
I don’t find it cheesy at all. Great work, Rheyne.
Nice work!
not quite cheesy but it does lean towards the ‘muzak’ direction… still, not too bad tho
but yeh, sometimes people expect a mountain of sound from a mountain of gear… that “kebu” guy is probably better at achieving that… much more cheesy too:

fuck yeh miami vice
What’s wrong with you guys trashing this? That wasn’t cheesy or bad at all. Real nice and relaxing piece. Also milkdrop worked really fine, lots better than dark, grainy and out-of-focus footage that’s the usual synth jam standard (I am perhaps most guilty of that myself).
And once again, here comes the destructive criticism.
There’s an old saying in my country that goes something like this:
“The dogs will bark but the caravan will pass”
If this is cheese, someone please cut me another slice.
If this is cheese, someone please cut me another slice 🙂
The skill and creativity required to put together performances like this is significant. Keep it up Rheyne!
Meh….. Sounds like preset heaven. Nothing original,
Calling it preset heaven is inaccurate. Its how patches are PLAYED that decides their real impact. Bill Bruford once told Dave Stewart that he didn’t need more patches for his Simmons rig; he wanted to learn how to use what he HAD more effectively. A guitar can be utterly different, handed from one player to another. Even a set of thousands of sounds can seem dull until you turn them into actual voices. Rheyne is getting it right. I sometimes give all the pads and grid boxes the Stinkeye until another player comes along and reminds me that its not all about the gear. BTW, his video did have that 60s feel, but a lot of it was also more modern and inspired. Not bad at all.
I guess I can be thankful that I’m not so pretentious or jaded as to have been unable to enjoy that. I thought it was beautiful. Nice setup too, looks like an incredibly fun place to make music.
Do some folks only feel good when they can bash others? Sad world. Why not just say nothing – or make it better in the first place and post it? THAT would be constructive and productive.
I liked it.
Sorry but I have to agree with the guy who said presets, he is right. With all that gear he has his music sounds like something I could put together In a minute. I get what he’s trying to do but there is no originality or he doesn’t have his own sound.. Keep at it though it doesn’t sound bad just no wow factor.
Rehyne’s videos are great. I enjoy each one. If you find the music cheesy or simplistic, think of it as background sounds for an interesting video about performing with modern music gear.
One criticism though, I can never remember where “h” goes in his name. :/
