Developer Achilleas Sourlas has introduced LoAdKer for iOS, a new app that lets you create fractal-based rhythms:
LoAdKer is a rhythm generator that uses fractal sequences as a means to produce complex but musical results.
The software was developed by Ax.Art, aka Achilleas Sourlas, a musician and music software developer and is a product of his research into the use of fractals for music composition. It currently runs on iOS 5.1 and above. LoAdKer uses Csound as its sound engine, a powerful audio programming language, developed in the mid-1980s at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) by Barry Vercoe.
Here’s a demo of LoAdKer in action:
LoAdKer is available for US $4.99 in the App Store.
If you’ve used LoAdKer, let us know what you think of it!
Very musical… NOT!
lol 90s much
Party on Wayne!
It does yield some cool results, sonically and especially rhythmically. It’s a little hard to tell what it does. At first, I was thinking it would be cool for it to MIDI out to other apps, but because it does some very high-speed flourishes in there, it might not work with MIDI.
Eh, it’s OK. It seems to like to spit out those speed-up rolls, doesn’t it? I find these kinds of beats are more fun and give you a bigger sense of accomplishment if you construct them from scratch from first principles. I can’t program, but there are plenty of plugins out there that let you make these kinds of sequences, while simultaneously not holding your hand too much or having “black box” syndrome. It’ll be interesting to see how this kind of thing evolves, though.
Now can we get a proper Csound environment for iOS?
Hmm, well I guess I should have read more before I bought it. I like what it does, but to me this is not a Fractal beat creator. This just make chaotic drum patterns. Great if you want to form an Autechre covers band but doesn’t contain the iterativeness or complexity I want. I want something that’ll build up beats that are programmable, created in the way that something like the dragon or snowflake curve are made.
A one hhat wonder?
