This video, via gstormelectro, captures a comparison of three classic string synthesizers – in all their creamy goodness:
- Logan/Honer String Melody II
- ARP/Eminent Solina SE-IV, and
- The Roland VP-330 MKI
It also includes a test of a DIY JH Triple Chorus ensemble module, auditioned with a dry Solina signal run through.
Nice demo, they all sound gorgeous , the chorus and slight flange (?) they really do sound good.
Makes me miss my old Elka Rhapsody.
are there any soft synths or VA hardware synths that have the depth of sound that these have?
Check out fxpansion Amber, it sounds pretty good, but definitely not as warm and lush as the real thing

amber sounds horrible in those audio clips…suppose i keep looking!
There’s quite a few VSTs out there.
The best one (IMO) is Big Tick’s Cheese Machine, and it’s been around a while.
There’s a list over on bedrrom producer’s blog (google is your friend).
Also, there’s quite a few available for Reaktor, in the user library in the NI forums.
If you’re looking for a free VSTi, check out Deputy Mk.II. Very impressive and versatile considering it’s free.
Check out the Tronsonic libraries for Kontakt. I don’t know any better ones.
i highly second the tronsonic logan synths – so much character – beautiful instruments and this video is awesome!
Check out GForce VSM, lots of great sounds and the expansion pack included the Polymoog Vox Humana.
wish he would have included the Roland RS-505 in this vid the 505 is beautiful and can hang with all of them.
Also the Moog Opus and Yamaha SK series.
For me, nothing beats my Crumar Performer!
You can try Gstorm VSTs :

Beautiful, nothing current can sound like these vintage beauties.
I grew up with roland gears, had most of them from SH 1 to Jupiter 8 of early days, nothing bits roland as user friendly!! The praphonic 505 was one of my essential for stage!!
+1 for GForce & for Tronsinic!
