Sequential Prophet 6 Audio Tour

This video, via PlugInGuru, is an audio tour of the new Dave Smith Instruments Sequential Prophet 6 analog synthesizer.

The Prophet 6 is Dave Smith’s tribute to the poly synth that started it all—the Sequential Prophet-5.

But it’s not simply a reissue of a classic. Rather, as Dave puts it, “It’s the result of our effort to build the most awesome-sounding, modern analog poly synth possible.”

The Prophet-6 takes the best qualities of the original Prophet-5—true voltage-controlled oscillators, filters, and amplifiers—and adds enhancements such as studio-quality effects, a polyphonic step sequencer, an arpeggiator, and more. The result is ‘pure, unadulterated analog tone’, with the stability and reliability of a state-of-the-art modern synth.

In the video, John Lehmkuhl – who has been creating patches for the factory patch library – demos a variety of patches and the features of the Prophet 6.

“This is one really sweet sounding analog synthesizer,” notes Lehmkuhl.

Details on the Prophet 6 are available at the Dave Smith Instruments site.

  1. I clicked on a link to see a review of hardware synth only to find a guy selling software . This is irritating and I think this is the first time I have come across this on the site.
I know this site likes to stay very polite , I am not amused by the review being a front for his business.

    1. Something is better than nothing…don’t complain for the fact that you can have a glimpse of this synth not yet in the market.

  2. Well, I guess people are gonna hate no matter what. John has been creating patches for years and it’s how he puts food on the table. This is the first video I’ve seen where someone goes from an INIT patch to finished. He also says what he doesn’t like about the synth (distortion loss of highs, lack of resonance on the HP filter) and demonstrates those dislikes. I dunno, i just don’t understand people hating on a guy that’s giving them a free look at a new synth that’s not out yet.

    1. Probably the 2+ minutes of Ron Popeil in the beginning (I didn’t even make it that far, shut it off after a minute of sales pitch).

    2. I have nothing against the guy, and I didn’t have a problem with him mentioning his business upfront….but when I’m two minutes into a gear review for Prophet 6 and he’s talking about Omnisphere, then it’s not a good thing. That had no place in this video and he really should’ve cut that part out. Useful info for next time.

  3. I don’t like to be negative about people’s videos, but I feel the need to speak about this one. Honestly, I thought it was sh*t. I feel like the guy complained more than anything, and about silly things like no EQ on an analog synth, etc.

In 25 minutes, I heard nothing but the most basic of sounds while he played with the cutoff. He also says Yamaha owned the Prophet name, seemingly unaware that Dave put out the Prophet ’08 eight years ago.

Complete waste. Just found it really annoying.

    1. Yamaha owned the Sequential name, not Prophet. That’s why Dave Smith re-launched using DSI, not SCI (Sequential Circuits Inc.).
By the way, totally agree in respect to the annoying factor of this video.

  4. I consider myself pretty tolerant, especially when it comes to web content that is provided for free. I also love anything to do with synths and will pretty much sit though any level of quality to get my next fix. I’ve also only ranted on forums a handful of times in my life, because opinions are cheap, right? However, this video really rubbed me the wrong way due to all the extensive self promotion, and I couldn’t watch any more after a few mins. Sorry to be such a wet blanket – just trying to give an honest opinion on what I experienced compared to what I was looking forward to watching.

  5. sounds soooo analog. Great sound at 18.42 also. Just breathes and moves. Awsome. i agree to skip a lot of the start rubbish but this is still a great video to hear the character and DNA essence of Prophet 6 via direct signal feed recording which have been VERY low on the ground until now.

Fallen even more in love 🙂

  6. I don’t get all the complaining. This is most informative type of synth video; unedited tweaking. I got more of a sense of the synth’s character here than in any other video thus far.

As for his plugs; this is a video, people, not a face to face conversation. Just fast forward until he’s done talking. Sheesh!

  7. Thanks for the link to the synth demo. The P6 sounds freaking awesome. People who are complaining about the guy plugging his own website and patches on a synth demo video posted to the websites youtube channel are ridiculous and don’t seem to know how the world works. Considering it’s a free video, and it’s 2 minutes of sales pitch and 23 of awesome synth action, I can only say thanks OP, and to synthhead for linking us to it.
