Darwin Arts has released Trilobite 1.0 (aka the “Professional Edition”) – a software modular synthesizer that the developer says uses ‘Darwinian Natural Selection to help you create radically bizarre new sounds’ from simple basic acoustic building blocks.
Trilobite’s visual editor allows you to construct custom synthesis patches to create drones, keyboard instruments, effects and more. Once you’ve created a custom instrument, you can then use the Evolution Engine to explore thousands of derivative possibilities, and even ‘breed’ your new patch with others.
Here’s a video intro:
Trilobite 1.0 is available now for US $69. A free demo version is also available.
If you’ve used Trilobite, leave a comment and let us know what you think of it!
A good idea, but the UI is terrible. Please, think in new way’s…. With this user interface, i think, it isn’t a goal….
I saw this a couple months ago? Maybe a year ago? I’m glad seeing it again! But, the UI looks awful on the eyes. The orange and green scheme is just not up to it. It makes the software look cheap and unreliable, consequently looks unprofessional. I tried the program a while back. It’s interesting and unique. The UI is the only thing I’d complain about.
There will never be a color scheme to please everyone, so instead I choose to please myself. It’s unfortunate that those with objections are always to most eager to speak up…does this color scheme in fact work for anyone but me? If not, you can easily reconfigure it to your taste under the View menu:

Knock yourself out.
I like the way it looks…
This video is not good at showing potential new users what this synth can do. It is more for hard core fans really trying to use this regardless the unintuitive GUI.
Instant epilepsy machine
I don’t care what the excuse is, that GUI is fucked. It’s ugly and super unintuitive. I’d have to REALLY want to use this software to suffer through looking at it. Honest feedback.
Trilobite 1.3 is now released. Its GUI might even be less fucked, based on your vocabulary and degree of editorial judgement. For more information, free downloads, and purchase links, visit http://www.darwinarts.com.
