Moog Going Eurorack With Mother-32 Modular Synthesizer

At Knobcon 2015, Moog Music today offered a sneak preview of a new synthesizer, the Mother-32.

The Mother-32 is a Eurorack synth module that is a basic all-in-one synth voice. It comes in its own case, but can also be mounted in a Eurorack system.

Architecturally, it is a single-VCO Moog synth voice – but with 32 audio and control voltage patch points, a built-in sequencer and ‘Moog sound’.

We had the opportunity to get some hands-on time with the new Moog Eurorack synth with Moog’s Steve Dunnington.  The Mother-32 promises to be a inexpensive standalone Moog synth module and also a great starting point for building a Eurorack modular system.

Moog was not allowing anyone to take pictures or record video yet, because the Mother32 is scheduled to be officially introduced in October. But read on for the details that we can share now!

Key Features:

  • All-in-one Moog synth voice (VCO, noise, multi-mode VCF, envelope generator, VCA, LFO) in Eurorack format
  • It manages to pack a lot of interesting features into a small synth, including:
    • frequency and pulse-width modulation on the oscillator;
    • invertable envelopes on the filter mod:
    • 1-octave keyboard controls in the front panel, similar to the Werkstatt’s; and
    • normalized connections let you use it without patching, but extensive patching options let you create a custom signal path.
  • Can be used as a standalone desktop synth module or as part of a Euro system
  • MIDI & CV control
  • 32 patch points
  • Built-in 32-stage step sequencer, with per-note control over a large number of parameters, including gate length, accent, glide and ratcheting
  • External control of the step sequencer, including tempo, run/stop, reset and more
  • 64-sequences can be saved
  • In addition to the single case, Moog will have racks that will stack 2 or three of the Mother32 synths

The Moog Mother-32 is expected to be available in early October, priced at US $599. We will have full specs, photos, audio demos when the product is officially announced.

  5. I saw and played with it for a bit at knobcon today. From what I remember 64HP, comes with the case and wooden side panels. You can take it out and use the casing for other rmodules and put mother in your existing case so that was a cool bonus. It sounded really good, its semi modular. And i think a lot of people who want to get into modular will buy it. Someone in the group asked when is Moog going to start doing eurorack..Steve Dunnington said…not in the near future.

    1. the last line of your statement is confusing. we are commenting on a moog eurorack module but you say that the dude said there not working on eurorack in the near future. but clearly they are. unless i just read this wrong.

  7. Excite! Take my money. Can finally get a good efficient rig started with some doepfer on the side and whatnot perhaps. But, is a single vco Moog at 599 better than a 2vco 2filter ms20 mini at around 499 these days?

    1. Neither is better, one is made by moog, the other by korg, yes if you just look at specs and price the ms20 mini looks better, but does it sound better, to some yes, but to others the moog will sound better
      for 300 you can get volca bass and volca keys, that’s 2 filters 6vco, does that make it better?

  11. It actually says “single-VCO Moog synth voice” i. e. not two VCO’s. It will, however, probaly feature a ladder filter and an envelope, and with an onboard sequencer and 32 patch-points this looks like a flexible little instrument indeed. The ‘racketing’ feature could provide some very complex jamming possibilities if you have, say, four of these connected together… – way to go, Moog! Keep those good instruments coming!

  15. This is amazing! Eurorack users will finally be able to put a saw wave through a 4 pole low pass filter! Huh… if they include an envelope or an LFO, think of the possibilities

  18. i must say a birdy told me of this and im proud i said nothing , but i mean eventually this had to happen and im stoked. 64 hp is huge and only 1 osc guess will see but either way great news. and mother 32 is poop they should stick with sub. i like sub32 better. go moog lets get a euro delay in the works now !!!1

  19. 2015 has been a massive year for eurorack i may get back into the game in 2016
    the market is saturated with useful used gear and the new gear is only getting better

  22. Roland going Eurorack with the System 500, now Moog going down the same path. I wonder if this is the beginning of the end for 5U, and whether Synthesizers.com are watching and thinking about their future plans?
