midiSTEPs For iOS – A Step Sequencer Inspired By The Roland SH-101

midiSTEPS

Arthur Kerns has introduced midiSTEPs a new step sequencer for iOS that he describes as ‘powerful but fun’.

midiSTEPs was designed to be easy to use, in a way that’s similar to the SH-101 sequencer, where you can just quickly enter a few keyboard notes and you’re ready to hit play. At the same time, it also incorporates many ideas from other classic and modern sequencers, allowing you to set control values per step, mute and skip existing steps, switch between multiple patterns and parts, sync and link patterns in various ways, and modify your sequences.

Here’s a preview of midiSTEPs in action:

Features:

  • 64 step sequencer based on the classic SH-101 sequencer
  • Set note, chord or rest per step
  • Set accent and tie per step
  • Set CC, velocity, length parameters per step
  • Mute and skip individual steps
  • Set start and end points within sequence
  • Edit individual steps
  • Transpose, loop or one shot, start and pattern sync options
  • Four independent sequencer parts with 16 patterns each per set
  • Parts can have different speeds, lengths, sync and trigger options
  • Pattern Mix page with clip-launcher style pattern triggering
  • External MIDI clock sync with clock shift adjustments and swing
  • Easy to set up CoreMIDI configuration and MIDI mapping
  • Easy to use touch interface designed specifically for iPad

midiSTEPs is available for US $9.99 in the App Store.

  1. Very good, probably a better option than the Fugue thing from the other day!

The only other sequencer I can think of like this on iOS at the moment is the one in Sunrizer, such a shame that doesn’t output midi!

Adding a reverse mode or two and a random trigger mode would be good!

    1. It doesn’t have reverse or random *playback* but it does have reverse and randomize (full or only on the non-rest steps) in the pattern editor.

There’s also a few options for pattern extension and one of them is essentially “append reverse” where ABCD becomes ABCDDCBA.

You can arbitrarily set the pattern start and stop points so yeah, bob’s yer uncle.

  2. This is the SH-101 sequencer in Boss Mode. That video absolutely does not do it justice. Think of it more like a 4-track Polyphonic BeatStep Pro. For 10 bucks.

It really is the year of the sequencer.

  3. Hey, thanks for covering my app. It started as a very simple SH-101 style sequencer, everything else beyond that (chords, Elektron style parameter locks, Volca style mute/skip, four parts, etc) were me adding “just one more thing…” I’m pretty happy where it ended up, there’s still room for a few more things but I want to make sure what’s there is solid first.

Here’s some promo codes if people would like to try it out:
    PKP73XYNHXXK
    6YT9A7PMHMXK
    4AKJFRP9LYY6

    Thanks again for mentioning it!

      1. you should email promo codes, not post them
code grabbers will just grab them and not thank you
I seen it a few times on here

  4. Folks who didn’t even bother to comment took the codes.

Not a big deal, but if you’re going to take… at least give a little something back, a thank you at the very least or you know, even some constructive criticism!

  5. I BOUGHT it right away. midiLFOs is brilliant and so is this. $10 is well worth it.

Support the devs folks! Especially the small shops.

    1. Hi, maybe I’m not following you?, but the app definitely does MIDI output. It’s exactly what the app does, it’s a MIDI step sequencer and sends MIDI to others apps or external devices connected to an iPad.
