At Musikmesse 2016, Yamaha was showcasing their new Montage synthesizer.
The Yamaha Montage, available in 61-, 76- and 88-key configurations, offers twice the power of the Motif line, plus an advanced FM synth engine.
The Motion Control Synthesizer Engine controls two iconic Sound Engines: Advanced Wave Memory 2 (AWM2) and FM-X:
- The AWM2 engine is compatible with previous generation Motif libraries, but is exponentially more powerful than the previous Motif XF flagship, with nearly ten times more wave memory, integrated flash, double the effects and twice the polyphony.
- Joining the powerful AWM2 engine is FM-X, a sophisticated pure FM (Frequency Modulation) synthesizer engine capable of producing classic ‘80s or cutting-edge EDM sound with incredible dynamic range, power and fidelity.
In this video, via SonicState, Bert Smørenburg demonstrates some of the sound possibilities of the Yamaha Montage.
The Superbooth show aside, this was arguably one of the most disappointing Messe shows in years. I was expecting Behringer/Midas to at least showcase their new poly-synth. And I know that Access generally shuns trade shows yet their presence at Superbooth, I believed would be a prelude to introduce their new synth. Again, disappointed.
Speaking of Yamaha, I had hoped they would finally make one of those renderings from 2014…a new powerful VA. I am sick of the Eurorack regressive movement.

What does your comment have to do with the Montage? Couldn’t find another thread to rant in?
yammy really likes those beast workstations
btw, i wonder if they will make another synth with the FM-X stuff? sounds cool
If only this was a workstation.
I was looking at the synth market today, it is vast and diverse. Ten years ago we were asking for MPE’s, digital this and poly analog; it is all there now – every synth for every pocket.
A few holes, a nice volca wavetable and some reissued Juno stuff… but now a point, once enough people remark on something lacking, someone, somewhere, has already been working on it for 6 months. These trade shows will get boring.
You can even see in that Novation Circuit that we are one step away from a DAW in a box for less than $1500; what can we ask for beyond that? And this isn’t a music or synth thing, it is happening with everything, everywhere.
That is one small aspect, another being the loop. Everyone is in a loop, once a new thing happens you see it in 10 places, 10 takes in 12 hours, you get desensitized to new stuff before it happens.
We are in a odd place, not quite there. As humans we are always wanting, that is easy to accept. But it becomes more frustrating as we can see how close we are to becoming complete.
I liked the time around 2000 better.
We had 16 voice polyanalog with a sequencer and two multimode filters per voice.

I hope that Yamaha provides for the construction of a RACK version or a DESKTOP version of MONTAGE, would be a good move towards other competitors. One other thing that I would like, would be to have the possibility to have a preset that continues to play with his left hand and simultaneously change a new preset with the right hand, not abruptly stop the transmission of sound. As an example I can mention Kurzweil K … series, Korg WaveStation VS, Radikal Accelerator TECHNOLOGIES, ……
Hey Yamaha Team think ……..
with the features as listed here, i really think a laptop would make a better tool than a rack unit for this kind of soundset!
sad to me with all the talk of the synth, the only hard synth sound in this whole video is just a tired dubstep sample sequence haha… they’ve made a decent all-around device once again, and sure a few high price buyers will go for it, but none of us young not-rich people are fooled that this thing is gona give you an imaginative synth workflow.
presenter: “it’s SO easy!” *clicks 9 menu pages, scratches his head produces no change in sound* “It’s ALL there.”

P.S. : I am sorry for my first comment, I don’ t read well the possibilities “Seamless Switching Sound”
This was a great demo of this product. Bert always does excellent demos. Very in depth. I learned more about Montage from this video than from all the others combined. What an awesome piece of equipment. The sounds are beautiful and clean.
The only downside to any new piece of equipment is taking the time to learn it. I am already behind on learning the equipment that I already have. But the pieces that I have taken the time to learn inside and out have paid of in spades! It seems to be that pieces of equipment like Montage are getting closer and closer to only needing one synth to do it all. I like the way they have this set up to interface with Cubase. This piece of equipment has been thought out very well.

I am having the hardest time figuring out what workstation is for me. I have a yamaha Montage 8 coming in the mail, but then I happened to realize that it is not a sequencing workstation ( No Song and Pattern track recording). And that it was designed to work as an interface for a DAW. Well since I have never used a DAW, I am not sure if I want to learn a whole new style of creating music. I have only owned a Motif ES which has Song and pattern track recording which is how I like to create my music. That being said, I am diligently searching for a new and updated unit that is as easy to create with as the Motif ES, which has an onboard sequencer for songs/patterns etc. Does anyone know about the Montage and why I would want to just wait for that to come? And what synth workstations would be recomended that are kick ass, most user friendly, and comes with amazing power, and has an onboard sequencer. I can only read so much about different synths before I just get stuck in wondering what the hell I should do and ultimately feel delighted with my choice. If anyone can take the time to respond I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you
