Netflix has announced a documentary on DJ Steve Aoki, I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead:
I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead, directed by Justin Krook, is a heart-pumping yet heart-wrenching documentary about one of the most eminent DJs working today: Steve Aoki.
In the lead-up to Aoki’s biggest show of his career, this introspective doc examines the driving force behind his passion: Rocky Aoki, daredevil showman, Benihana founder, and Steve’s looming father figure.
From producers Matthew Weaver (Rock of Ages), Matt Colon, Happy Weaver and David Gelb (Chef’s Table, Jiro Dreams of Sushi).
Steve Aoki: I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead debuts on Netflix Aug 19, 2016.
Are all his ghost producers, top liners, songwriters and vocalists on this documentary as well? Never trust in a “dj” who throws cakes in your audience.
Why is this on synthopia?
I don’t know – maybe because it’s about one of the top DJ’s and producers in the world?
who decided this clown was one of the top Dj’s or producer in the world? wtf? lol Could it be the same people who chase imaginary pokemon on the streets? Yeah…he’s no where near the shittiest list of DJ’s. The dude sucks.
Are you serious? This guy is neither a producer or anything close to a DJ (and by DJ, I mean someone that can “mix” tracks either digital or on vinyl (or 8-track if you are really in the top 0.001% like me). Aoki is a performer like a lot of his peers. He does his cake-thing because the kids want a performer. And I also wonder why the hell this is on here.
On the top? His music is like shit
I’ve been into electronic music since 1981, and honestly, I’ve never heard of him.
don’t make me laugh…
Idk if this is true but I once read an article about Steve aoki where someone had taken a picture of his laptop screen while he had music software open and by certain details on the screen it was clear that it was pirated software. Like I said.. not sure if it was real but if it was that is a really crappy thing to do. If you are well established in music business and have the money to pay the companies who allow you to continue your livelihood, have the decency to pay them what they deserve. Pirating software is for people who can’t afford better… at that moment I mentally spit on Steve aoki. Stealing is wrong in general, but in his case there’s no excuse.
I remember that story.

oh wow – a trust fund kid hits the bigtime.. shocker of the century
Wankers. Haters. I don’t know much about a lot of things. But I do know the most basic principal of value. And what determines value?
Value is determined by what some one is willing to pay for something. This guy has sold millions of tickets to his shows (I assume based on this video), and seems to me the people for the most part like him. Trash talking this man might make you feel superior to him. Remember, feeling superior and being superior are two different things. Feeling superior means, well, just that. LOL it means you only FEEL superior. The thought is nice and I wish it would work for you, but feeling like this great man is below you is the wrong formula to reaching perfection. He’s obviously great, and if great sucks, and I don’t suck, well then, that makes me perfect! Nice try boys. Rebember, there’s no shortcut to greatness. LOL
We had to take a philosophy class just so you could say “I heart Steve Aiko”. I never signed up for philosophy 101 but thanks. But the debate is really how a performer is one of the top DJ’s in the world. A DJ can be one of the top DJ’s in the world. Obviously he is great. He gets the same prestige as Donald Trump but in a different Arena and with a different crowd. If thats all it takes to be considered valuable “anyone peddling any sub-par content would also be considered great, right? Its always funny when someones argument is that “people love it” like at least 40% of the population aern’t sheep and they also love drugs and smoke machines.
Hilter was popular.

Dearest Synthopia,
Nobody cares about diva DJs on Synthopia. Stick to the synths! Aoki is one of the best examples of vapid pop garbage. The only reason he is “successful” stems from the fact that his father amassed a large sum of money through his Benihana restaurant chain. He has very little, if any musical talent.
The only reason Steve should ever pop up on this site is if he was showing off his synth collection (which he doesn’t have).
Wait.
He’s wearing a vest with his own face on it?
Surely a better name for the documentary would have been “Steve Aoki: I’ll sleep when they’ve finished printing the pyjamas with my face on them.”
This guy was considered a joke when he was a part of the southern california DIY hardcore punk scene in the mid-to-late 90’s. Still is considered a joke as far as I can see.
slightly relevant and pretty, pretty hilarious:

Steve is local to Orange County. He was and still is the nicest, hardest working person you will ever meet. He loves his fans as much as his family. He DJ’d on Vinyl for years. He borrowed $ to start his label. Slept on the floor of a rat infested craphole and didnt take $ from his dad. He paid his dues. He has used his time and $ to help countless bands. Now tell me what have you been doing for the last 25 years ?
Does anybody know, which t-shirt Steve Aoki wears at the fourth minute. It’s an all-over printed t-shirt with several national flags. I searched so long, but I haven’t found it yet.
