Look at just about any Eurorack modular synthesizer, and there’s a good chance you’ll find some Mutable Instruments modules.
Or a variant.
Mutable Instrument’s developer Émilie Gillet releases his work as open source software and open hardware designs, which means that others can build on his work, port it to other platforms and release variations on it.
Recently, several of Gillet’s designs were ported to Linux, Mac & Windows as part of the free VCV Rack virtual modular synthesizer. Now two of Mutable’s most popular modules, Braids & Clouds, are available as free Max For Live plugins for Ableton Live users.
Developer Timo Rozendal has released MutatedTexturizer and MutatedTexturizerAlt, free M4L plugins, based on MI’s Clouds and the Parasites alt firmware.
These plugins can create all kinds of delay based effects, sometimes using granular synthesis methods, other times using transformed Fourier methods or even tuned delay lines.
Download from Rozendal’s site.
Rozendal has also released Mutated Macro Oscillator – a free M4L instrument, based on the source code of the MI Braids module. The code has been ported to a Max external (Mac only) and has been made polyphonic (8 voices). Other additions include a filter (designed by Surreal Machines), plus 2 envelopes for modulation sources.
Mutated Macro Oscillator is also available as a free download from Rozendal’s site.
If you’ve used either, leave a comment and share your thoughts!

Cool
Wow, this is awesome! Very generous as well. Thanks for the devices, I look forward to playing around.
May you please post instructions on how to make the Clouds emulator work in Ableton Live? Thank you for your kind work!
there was an issue with freezing the externals. Can you try the link to the unfrozen version or the download or try the new version of the download (the 1.1b zip). Otherwise drop me an email and I’ll try to help you further.
There’s a M4L version of Grids out there somewhere too
the modelling of the DAC better be on point. not going to even try before 5 hour long comparison videos convince me the emulation sounds identical to the originals
Hey, Braids is not that vintage! A modern 16-bit DAC played at 96kHz doesn’t bring much coloration. Your pet rodent might complain about the disappearance of aliases above 48kHz, though (Braids doesn’t have a very steep reconstruction filter).
Since I develop, tune and test most of my code as mac OS software rather than on the hardware itself, one could argue that this software Braids is actually closer to the Platonic Braids I had in my mind when I developed it 🙂
Stingray!
c’etait une blague. je roule le clouds code sur mon axoloti depuis quelques mois deja et je me plaigne pas 🙂
Thanks Olivier!
very cool, can´t get macrooscillator to work though, i even installed the filter pack but no sound output.
you need Max 7.2 or higher, do you have that? (it includes an object that was introduced in 7.2)
thank you, updated to 7.3 and it works! It´s interesting that one voice eats up almost the half of my i5 Macmini´s CPU, i thought it would perform better compared to the cpu of the module. 🙂
you need to be on 10.9 on a mac
thanks, i´m on 10.11 on a mac, if we´re talking about the OS here, will try to update MAX to the latest version, i´m acouple of minor updates behind.
How is it possible to get the presets to work. Everything is up to date here but Presets don’t load when added to midi track.
Could not access the Max device file ‘name.amxd
I don’t know, for most people the presets work, for some they don’t. I am puzzling with Cycling’s support. I advice you to move the whole folder to your user library.
try this:

there is an issue with High Sierra and M4L/LIve (latest 64bit versions) might want to try this:

Hi buddy! I dunno why but its not running on my Mac, all the time i try to open, my ableton close the session like a crash. Can you please help me with this? tks!
Hi, Timo.
Could it work on Win?
Serhii,
I tried and then asked Timo the same thing today. I was able to install the M4L modules they look happy running…but there is no Audio output from them. ( I have Windows 10). Apparently the modules have C++ code that has only been compiled on MacOS. Someone who has Windows and the appropriate development tools will need to port it over.
