SoundLabel has released Piano Attack, a sample library of prepared piano. The unique prepared piano sample library is now available as a Reason ReFill. the library is available as a 570 MB download version or a CD-rom boxed version.
Piano Attack features sounds from a wide range of prepared and ‘abused’ pianos. Rather than wrecking your own piano in an attempt to get these unusual sounds, SoundLabel ‘liberated’ pianos from their black and white keys and recorded every possible sound in their studios. They even destroyed one piano completely to create a unique sound library for composers, musicians and sound designers.
The collection includes phrases, hits, atmospheres, rushers, zings, beats, loops, demolition sounds and more.
Composer and electronica artist BT used a pre-release version recent soundtrack work. According to BT, Piano Attack “is f**king dope, that I am totally using for “Stealth”, the Rob Cohen movie.”
The Piano Attack Reason ReFill version contains 200+ patches, 157 REX beats and 21 REX phrase files. This sample library is designed for filmscoring, composing, dance and remix productions, sound design and signature sounds.
The next release (Nov. 2005) will be a DVD rom with 200+ Logic EXS24 patches and 390 Logic 7 channel strip presets in combination with a huge Kontakt2 library (2.9 GB) and 157 loops and beats in REX format.
Price: € 199.

The sounds are probably intriguing and musically useful.
However, haven’t we had enough of this old hype of “abusing” and “destroying” musical instruments? Even the cover image is disturbing. It’s an old idea, back to musique concrète and the art of noises, and beyond. Let’s find a new way to describe our art beyond transgression and iconoclasm. We can still be just as creative in the context of respecting our musical ancestors. We are, after all, standing on the shoulders of giants.

One more thing: With all due respect to BT’s technical virtuosity, his inane comment was hardly quoteworthy, and is enough to turn me off from buying this product.
When I was 8 years old, I opened up the family grand piano and began doing stuff to the strings, on the QT like. I was destined for this Reason Refill !! You can use this for just about everything,: soundscapes, film FX, modern jazz, musique concrete, modern dance, commercials, jingles, personal therapy. True, some of the NN XT patches will make you want to jump off a bridge, but in a good way, Remember, the sound suggests the playing technique and pretty soon you have a piece of music that no one has heard before! , this is pure sonic theatre, and if you are weird and wired like me, this will be your heaven, incredible value for money because you have so many instruments this Demonic Orchestra! Have fun, go mad, live a little.
