This video captures a demo of the Magic Voice cartridge from Commodore – a speech synthesis device that allows the Commodore 64 (C64) computer to talk.
If you’ve got any experience with Commodore 64 speech synthesis with the Magic Voice or other applications. leave a comment!
I posted this a few years ago at my homepage … got it from KilrPilr
Nice to see it at youtube.
The best speech synthesizer for the Commodore 64 or Commodore 128 was the Votrax Speech Synthesizer which was a stand alone box that jacked into the computer and was made by the Votrax Screw and Machine Company who was a pioneer in speech synthesis technology
SAM was all I had for my 64. sounds just like Mr. Hawking.
You did have to alter the spelling to get the "correct" pronunciation but with a little creative thinking you could also simulate accents.
As a related aside I also tried, and never succeeded, to make my Koala Pad work with either the SID chip or SAM. I did figure out how to make it work as a joystick for a couple of BASIC games, that inspired the attempt. Innocence (or ignorance) makes for some of the best ideas.
