This is creepy and cool at the same time – Toyota has created a robot that can play the violin – better than a lot of amateur violinists.
As music robots get better, it will raise a lot of questions about the unique role of musicians in creating expressive music.

Would it have been funnier if the robot played “Daisy”?
OK, now the serious questions: Was is based on motion capture programming? Is there some guy with a remote telemetry rig and another violin behind the curtain? Is there a “violin skill” program that separately interacts with a music reading program? (which would at least be cooler than simple motion capture)
Great questions – there wasn’t any info with this on YouTube – but it’s probably a programmed performance.
Robotic interpretive performance isn’t that far off, though. See Silpor Music’s MOR.
Hi; It is estimated that by the year 2023 a 1000 dollar computer will reach the human brain potential for processing data; which means that there is a huge market of hundreds of billions dollars waiting for humanoid robots and intelligent systems; try to read the tips for the new robot HRP-4C on my website. I am sure you will be able to build one or to help promote the issue:
