Cochleor has introduced Harmony Improvisator, a VST for Mac and PC that puts the rules of harmonic theory into a plugin.
Description:
The mathematical logic of harmonic theory, which has evolved within the art of composition over centuries, is rarely emphasized in today’s music software. Even professional composers invest a remarkable amount of time in trying out chord progressions.
Improvisator shortens this phase of work and provides you with the desired results quickly and accurately whether you are new to harmonic theory or a music professional.
Harmony Improvisator is available now as a VST effect plug-in for PC and Mac (Intel) for 99 EUR (incl. 19% tax) or US $129.
Explore unusual, contentful chords and harmonic ideas by clicking the mouse. Whether pop-music or choral – correct harmonic progression is now accessible in your VST host.
- Improvisator comes with a rich database of chords – the systematic naming of which relates to their function in a musical context
- Improvisator automatically obeys voicing rules; it avoids 5th parallels, voice crossings etc.
- Improvisator provides clever harmonic suggestions for continuing a train of harmonic functions
- Creativity is stimulated by the opening up of unlimited space for harmonic experimentation.
Features:
- Perfect harmonic improvisation
- Composing with the rules of classical harmonic theory – no professional knowledge required
- Complex cadences suitable for all styles of music
- Unique concept of harmonic pattern sequencing
- Automatic calculation of harmonic suggestions
- Critical time advantage for creating harmonic frames of songs, soundtracks, and arrangements.
Go take that $129.00 and buy some piano lessons and become a REAL musician, that way you can actually learn to create the music that comes out of your mind.
while i appreciate your spirit, i year of lessons has cost me $2500, and i spend lots and lots of time trying out chord progressions when i compose. i don't think i'll use this software, but i don't think it should be so quickly dismissed. i could be used as a teaching tool, too.

What makes a "REAL" musician is a vain exercise in subjectivity. This is a tool like any other; sequencers, synthesizers, samplers, AutoTune, drum loops, etc. these things can be used in good ways or bad ways. This tool could be employed in interesting ways but as always: crap in, crap out.
I like these type of helper apps! James you always find good stuff I blogged it too 🙂
DO NOT PURCHASE! Technical Support and Customer Service for Cochleor are virtually nonexistent. I ran into some problems with the Harmony Improvisator crashing my DAW. I have made repeated attempts to contact Cochleor for technical support or a refund. Of the 9 attempts to contact them, I only received one single-line response, which did not address my issues.
yes, no support.. ridiculous I hate that more than anything
yeah anyway, not working logic 9 SL with fxpansion VST to AU adpater
ditto the technical support. The "right click" options for HI do not work on a mac (they are crucial for operating HI), so I asked what buttons should I be pressing to activate the options (i tried everything, alt, cmd, shift etc). No response whatsoever.
The "manual" is absolutely pitiful.
It is a shame as it could be quite good, but if you select one of the next suggested chords in the sequence, the set up changes key and you have no idea where you are or how to get back to where you were.
the suggested altered chords are just I IV and V, and his major scale does not have a seventh note on the scale, so clearly this is just for a specific classical way of composition
Tried it out, it is a murky mess to learn. Can't tell if it is any good or not, it's too difficult to use with a useless manual.
Well, it works for me. Generates countless ideas and with a little work, can be very rewarding.
To bad it cannot be wrapped to AU…
Super frustrating to not be able to have support on LOGIC 9. An industry standard that demands support from any vst/au offering such an awesome feature. Looks like another company that will be left behind, oh well, theres tons of other chord-plugins that do the same and more, just les of an easy to read GUI.
Harmony Improvisator is a stimulator for harmony music theory and it helps me to explore chordprogressions. It’s not the end but just the beginning of a harmony comprehensive learning curve.
