Spanish Guitar On Synthesizer

Sunday Synth Jam: Rob Adlers’ Synthesizer Study No 1 was inspired by attempting guitar strumming and dynamics on a real harpsichord.

This led to harpsichord/piano timbres on a synthesizer, then finally to an acoustic guitar virtual instrument patch on the Korg M50.

  1. That is like a bad joke. Just look up in You Tube anything by Paco de Lucia, Vicente Amigo or Enrique de Melchor and then just try to find the faintest resemblance, be it harmonic, dynamic, stylistic, rythmic, tonal. or anything.

Awful beyond words. If that guy really was attempting to sound like a Spanish guitar the results are a monumental failure.

  2. LOL … the Guest nails it pretty well, altho' I needn't go to YouTube; I just need to go downstairs and open the guitar case to hear "Spanish" guitar.

To give the dude a little credit, I'll suggest that he's created a patch that sounds like a concert harp.

Maybe it's his lack of the "sense" of intonation, touch, and articulation of the notes that guitar technique requires that has resulted in this mess. (And yeah, I studied keyboard, specifically harpsichord!).

  4. It's too pianistic for me. Maybe he should have listened to Alborada del Gracioso from Ravel's Miroirs or some other stuff from Joaquin Rodrigo for some clues on guitar-like keyboard playing. Anyway, people should give this guy credit for trying out his experiment; it's a study.

  6. Wellll… I think it works ok-ish up to about 2:00, then breaks down and becomes just synthpiano accompaniment + not-too-good synth patch.
Somehow he can't come back after that.

Actually, 0:20-1.30 is not a bad attempt. Remember how bad guitar sounds in any soundfont? – it's usually some of the worst sounds.

Now rinse ears with Manito de la Plata re-release from AvantGardeProject.org.
    Purity of essence!

  8. "It doesn't sound like a real guitar" is predictable and inevitable every time something like this comes up. (I won't get into "blind hearing tests" outside of this scope.)

What I'd really like to know is the artist's intent! What were they hoping to achieve, and regardless of external opinion, are they happy with it? This guy looks like he's having fun.

  10. The video title has been updated since this was posted. The reference to Spanish guitar was removed from the title. I think 'inspired by guitar' is more in the spirit. It's a keyboard piece in the end using a guitar sound.

  13. I love the way human beings strive to declare how much better they are than anyone else. It makes them feel so vindicated. Good for them. Eventually, worm food. The lot of you. Keep that in mind. I like this performance. It just looks strange coming out of a keyboard. And I have listened to Manitas de Plata (not Manito de la Plata, idiota) since I was a kid. Saying that a well meaning amateur in his living room doesn't sound like one of the grand masters of music isn't saying much about the scope of your wisdom.

  14. Although I would?ve preferred if you went into a little bit more detail, I still got the gist of what you meant. I agree with it. It might not be a popular idea, but it makes sense. Will definitely come back for more of this. Great work
