To me a "synthesizer" is an instrument that lets you design your own sounds, with envelopes, filters, operators, or the like. By this definition, I guess, Korg DS-10 is smallest π
Being a "Casio fanboy" (owning a CTK4000 and loving it) I also think its kinda doubtfull to call this a synth. Not wrt the specs Elbjorg posted but I just don't see this little dipper change its produced sounds in any way. In fact; I'm not even sure it actually produces its own sounds π
Doesn't change the fact that I do like this little critter. Go Casio GO! π

where are them tweaking knobs at?
If it's anything like the VL-Tone you can tweak the attack, decay, sustain and resonance with the ADSR setting. Really basic, but cool for any kid back in 1980 with no money for a moog.

Technically, the synthesizer classification is relative to how the sounds are generated.
Point to BrookB. Back in the 80s. There were zero affordable Synth anything around. I was quite excited to et a VL-Tone when they came out. Bad gear, but good times. Gotta plug in somewhere right?
I really liked its demo tune π
the korg monotron is the smallest synth, it has dimensions of an iphone!
