James Cameron’s Horrible Lost 80’s Synthpop Video

James Cameron‘s music video for Martini Ranch‘s Reach, takes pretty much everything that was horrible about the 80’s, sets it to a stock drum machine + FM bassline groove, and then adds in a few lingering shots of female body builders for good measure.

Martini Ranch was made up of actor Bill Paxton and vocalist/guitarist Andrew Todd Rosenthal, who recorded one album, with the help of the guys from Devo.

While James Cameron’s music video for Reach features Paxton and a stream of celebrity cameos, we’re pretty sure it was “game over” for Martini Ranch after this.

Note: There are some things you can’t unwatch. This is one of them.

  1. hmm, all i wanted to say was that nobody is discounting any other horridness out there…

It's just the amount of future & former stars or quasi famous people it took to turn out this utter pile… Is monumental to say the least I think… 😉

  2. Oh I think any Italo Disco music video is worse than this. But still, I'm now taking donations to create an alternate universe in which James Cameron never existed.

  3. hey nobody is discounting any other form of horridness such as this music video. I think what sets this apart is the sheer amount of "talent" (albeit not much musically) this video & song took to pull off. Truly monumental if you look at how many future & former stars took part in this thing…

There's just so many moments when EVERYONE around that "set" should've just stopped and said "What, the, fuck, are we doing???" Maybe too much Martini on that Ranch 😉

  4. I love the Avatar 3D film, particularly the story line, not only it brings a completely new sensation but eye opening thoughts of humanity. I heard the New Avatar 2 is comming soon, can’t wait to watch it again…!

  5. I hate to say it, but I actually sort of liked it. Probably not in the way anyone involved hoped anyone would, but still.

I think what makes it bad is that it was actually from the late ’80s and a semi-serious thing, while it would have been good/okay if it was some new-retrowave-stuff that came out now.

(I know, I know, there’s something wrong with me).

  6. When country killed synthpop… hum, I do not know where to start. Is the music worst than the video or the video worst than the music?
Would it be better here to be blind or deaf.. or both.. or better, just dead!

  7. I always loved that song – always having taken it as a spoof, a one-off joke. And, being a joke, a spoof, the video was quite appropriate.
