Torley does his late-night cable-access TV Project Presets thang, checking out Ohm Force Symptohm Melohman PE.
Project Presets is a series of videos where Torley checks out the presets of a new synth and riffs on the sonic possibilities.
Melohman Performer Edition is a simplified version of Symptohm:Melohman, and is available for Mac and Windows.
The core of the synth, its oscillators and all the filters are there: it’s the same audio engine of the ‘normal’ version. The only difference is that they’re all already programmed/fixed for each one of the patches from Symptohm’s sound library.
I looked into this stuff but I think its not worth the effort IMO. First of all its not really a free plugin; they want you to register on their website before you can download, and so require your e-mail address. My stance on these kinds of websites is simple: if they require you to share your e-mail address for a "free" download then its not free. Who knows what they'll do with this data?
DO not underestimate this; there is a reason why we're dealing with a tremendous amount of spam on the Internet these days.. It wouldn't be the first time someone tries to collect working e-mail addresses only to share this data with others.
And this isn't about download bandwith either; amazing how you can easily download a demo version of the full version *without* having to give away you're address. So is free really free? Call me cynical, but I don't think so.
Second reason why I stopped caring is the whole thing seems kinda arrogant. I mean; you're getting a limited sound plugin which you can't use to change any settings, you can only select between the supplied presets. So what's the added value of this plugin having a synth engine if you can't actually tweak anything?
Then I read the description stating: "Download it right now and you'll be playing what maybe is one of the best freeware synths out there…" and then I kinda shook my head and moved on. A synth which you can't tweak in any way? Yeah right 🙂
Naturally I can't comment on the full product, but this is by far "the best freeware synth".

Pardon the quick posting after one other (can't edit) but to bring in another argument as to why I think this product isn't really free: http://www.ohmforce.com/UseFreeSoftware.do?action…
Here you can download a demo version of SymthonPE /without/ having to register. Dunno if this demo is actually limited in any way and how much it differs from the "free" version, but I think its kinda funny to present a free plugin, and a demo of that same plugin 😉

I totally get what you mean… Still at the end of the day, if you don't PAY anything at any point then it IS in fact free…
Just make a junk email addy that you won't use for anything else and you're done/good to go! 🙂
Just a thought….
my five year old loves it!
@SynthFan, While I understand your complaints FULLY… Still, I can't help but comment that if all they're asking for is an email then you SHOULD consider it "free" … If you're so bent out of shape about giving an email you use all the time, why not just create a junk email addy from Yahoo/Google/Etc. ???
Sure we'd all love to just click, DL and go… But when things are free, meaning you pay nothing, it's up to the people making it as to how you have to go about getting it for paying NOTHING.
Sure there are other free synths that you can do whatever you want and you don't have to register for anything or give really any details… Still at the end of the day if all a company requests is an email, make a junk email, DL and go on with your day! 🙂
