Moog Music has announced the lineup for MoogFest 2011 – the annual festival of electronic and visionary music, celebrating the spirit of Bob Moog. The event, scheduled for Oct. 28 – 30, returns to Asheville, NC, Moog’s home town.

This year’s Moogfest lineup features classic electronic music pioneers, contemporary groundbreaking artists, and young upstarts.

‘70s innovators, including Tangerine Dream, Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Suicide, will present rare US performances. They join a lineup that includes the Flaming Lips, Passion Pit, STS9, Ghostland Observatory, Crystal Castles, Chromeo, Battles, Umphrey’s McGee, Mayer Hawthorne & The County, M83, Holy F**k, Matthew Dear, Twin Shadow, Toro y Moi, The Naked & Famous, Tim Hecker, Anika, Austra, Causing A Tiger, and Gold Panda. More artists are to be announced.

The final Moogfest 2011 lineup will feature performances by over 60 internationally acclaimed artists in numerous venues throughout downtown, including the Asheville Civic Center Arena, the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium, and the Orange Peel Social & Pleasure Club.  The festival will also host workshops, talks, interactive experiences and art exhibitions and installations.

Last year, we questioned whether MoogFest was turning into a festival for hipsters, because the lineup didn’t seem especially “Moog”.

Was somebody listening?  Check out the lineup, below, and let us know what you think.

  1. This line up looks pretty interesting – but I wish they'd have a day of musicians that are doing synth music. It's not like there's a lack of Moog users that could use a little exposure.

  2. well it's a pretty "indie" line-up…on the other hand getting a bunch of "Moog Legends" would probably cost a hell of a lot more than bringing a few indie flavors of the month. But Flaming Lips are the top bill? The flaming lips to me are just a gimmicky pseudo-indie guitar band. I mean I just went to youtube to see if I could find a video of a them doing a synth solo and i had to watch a 15 second ad for Twix before the video loaded. Woah, so indie! Instead of calling it Moogfest why not The Generic Indie Rock Summer Jam <brought to you by Moog(tm)>.

  3. i dunno… there's a bunch of names i don't know and the ones i do know ARE certainly considered 'indie' but for Crystal Castles, Battles & Little Dragon alone, all of which I KNOW are heavy Moog users this line up would be cool enough to check out… and since when does a band or artist have to break into a 10 minute+ synth solo to be considered a user of a product???

    Come on people… sheez.

  4. MoogFest was never an indie rock festival when Bob Moog was alive.

I can understand Moog Music wanting to make this a big event, both to make the event viable financially and as an asset for the city.

But, if you call it MOOG-Fest, the thing should like Mecca for synth freaks!
