IK Multimedia has released SampleTank for iPhone and iPod touch, a $9.99 app (App Store link) that basically turns your iOS device into a rompler with 4-part multi-timbral operation.
The $9.99 version comes with 68 virtual instruments and is expandable to 400+ instruments though in-app expansion pack purchases.
Does this make dedicated hardware romplers obsolete? For a lot of users, probably so.
If you’ve used SampleTank for iPhone and iPod touch, let us know what you think of it!
Features:

- Easy-to-use, intuitive mobile interface
- Designed in concert with iRig MIDI interface for iOS devices
- Free version also available
Note: The video shows SampleTank running on an iPad – but it’s in compatibility mode.
Hmm, plugging a Motif into an iPad to use as a controller keyboard. Seems like driving a Lamborghini with a Yugo engine.
Yes! 900MB of samples for over 400 instruments vs 355MB for 2,670 waveforms. Fortunately, you snatch this Lamborghini into your handbag and leave the good old Yugo into the garage.
Am I right in assuming this is not the iPad HD version as indicated in the photo? Is there going to be such a thing? all the previews so far have indicated it’s a iPad app.
Cornball interface. 2x mode burns my ass. Store icons in and ads in plain sight blows. $50 for this? Not I. It might sound good, but if it aint appealing to my eye like the IMS20, I can’t create with it. Its an eye sore.
I’m not really sold on the Sampletank sound. I have Sampletank XL, Sonicsynth and Miroslav. I really only use Miroslav since I think the other two sound harsh and not very musical. Miroslav however is a little goto low-requirements orchestral gem.
They say version 1.1 will be a universal app. Best of all it is Core MIDI! The sounds blew me away. Still can’t get over this is all coming out of an iPhone. Plus if you have the iRig MIDI, you can power it with USB while you play, so it’s fully stage ready.
And I just saw the FREE version is now on iTunes! 😀
