Here’s a look a look at the classic (1984) Roland Juno-106 analog synthesizer, via AnalogAudio1:

In this movie I play some of my own sounds – on some sounds I used a small amount of digital delay from a Roland DEP-5 (my favourite unit for delays).

The Juno-106 is one of the most loved and used synthesizers by professionals and hobbyists alike! William Ørbit, Überzone, Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim), Autechre, BT, Vince Clarke, Moby, 808 State, Underworld, Leftfield, Fluke, Josh Wink, Todd Terry, Depeche Mode, Eat Static, Biosphere, The Prodigy, The Shamen, Bushflange, Cirrus, Astral Projection, Apollo 440, Faithless, Union Jack, Computer Controlled, Pet Shop Boys, Sneaker Pimps, Erasure, Freddy Fresh, Rabbit in the Moon, Kevin Saunderson, Jimmy Edgar, Laurent Garnier, Vangelis, Sigur Ros, and the Chemical Brothers have used this synth.

  1. The Juno106 always had the chorus fx and the ease of the interface makes it immediate in a highly creative way. Good interface and great sound = Classic It was not perfect however …. failing chips was not a fun aspect of the Juno. If Roland wanted a comeback this would be one machine that could bring them back. I would buy a modern Juno106 without a thought.

  2. I wouldn’t pay 1000 1984 dollars for a 1 osc synth, chorus or not. Its at least 2 osc or GTFO!

    JX10 as a starting point or just make a V-Synth.

    1. From your statement you more then likely have never had the pleasure of hands on use of the Juno106. I’m not saying its for everyone … but most people after messing with it for a few minutes want to own it.

    2. JX-10 sounds like SHIT. Juno 106 on the other sounds great and is immediate, fun and inspiring. JX-10 has an awful filter, bad sounding oscs and is full of bugs.

  3. I recently picked up a 106. My first impression after years of using multiple OSC softsynths was a let down. However, as I’ve continued to spend time with it, it’s slowly become the favorite from my arsenal. I absolutely LOVE the delay function on the LFO and the ability to invert the envelope on the filter.

    In my experience, the charm of these boards stems from their simplicity-to-sound-quality ratio. While I love patch creation more than actually playing, not the strongest aspect of my 106, the Juno series is an inspiring group of instruments that beg you to play them.

  4. I’m sad that I sold mine. I needed new monitors at the time so I parted with it for 450. The thing was in absolute mint condition…

  5. When I listen to a demo like this suddenly something turns clear to me… How some companies completely lost its way.
