In the latest iOS Update, Sweetwater’s Mitch Gallagher takes a look at Shredder – a guitar-to-MIDI synth app for iPad – and Splashtop 2 – a remote desktop app.
Gallagher tries out the Shredder guitar-to-MIDI app, which lets you play synthesizer sounds via your guitar with no additional MIDI-converting hardware required. It also lets you save your performance as a MIDI file for use in your DAW or sequencer.
Splashtop 2 is an app that gives you control over your Mac, so you can use it for remote control of your DAW software. Since it’s basically showing you the same thing as your computer’s monitor, you don’t need to set up or assign any controllers.

well, I thought splashtop 2 looked awesome so I went and bought, having some real issues connecting via ad-hoc, following the instructions they give. Ipad is connected ok, computer shows up in the app, but clicking on it gives no response whatsoever, no error, anything. it’s like it’s not even a button. also it keeps asking me to connect to the internet, despite being in local ad-hoc mode.
time to see the worth of their support team, will report back..
hey they got back pretty quick, and their solution fixed the issue ( I’d missed setting up static ip on ipad/laptop)
I enjoyed splashtop a lot! it was a little fiddly to use ableton, controlling sliders and knobs is a pain- but! creating sequences in the piano roll via touch on ipad was fantastic, much nicer than mouse editing. speed over ad-hoc network is very responsive.
I can see myself setting up instruments, levels etc beforehand then switching to splashtop to do all the midi editing with my feet up instead of hunched over the laptop.
still much to explore, and I don’t like that some extra features are *subscription* iaps, but it’s worth what I paid no doubt.
Nice to see that there are now several software apps that are doing my old childhood dream of converting guitar to MIDI. Jamorigin’s guitar to midi also does something like this. (looking forward to competition driven improvements }:-) )
