This year, MIDI controller developer Livid Instruments decided to celebrate the 4th of July in a creative way – by creating a MIDI-controlled flame-thrower organ.
Here’s what they have to say about their creation:
For the 4th of July this year we decided to go big. Fire big. We created a MIDI controlled flame organ, controlled by our Brain, some relays, solenoid valves, and performed on the BASE through Ableton Live and Pure Data.
We mixed the best of our performance instruments, with the craziness of our DIY line.
Happy 4th!
Check it out and let us know what you think of the MIDI-controlled flame-throwing organ!
Wow!!! Bad ass!!! Happy 4th to everyone!!!!!!

Pretty epic! Happy 4th!
Absurd waste of fuel in this day/age. Better if it could suck/vacuum the ozone layer.
hot debate, yes.?
Absurd criticism – but keep trying, you’ll get better!
Firewire or Thunderbolt or Blue Cross/Blue Shield?
False advertising. While it is pretty, i thought this would be a midi controlled tonal pyrophone. There is a percussive sound generated, but little tonality from the flames. Has anyone made a decent midi controlled pyrophone? What I mean is an instrument where the flames actually modulate the tone, not what we see in the vid, which is midi sounds coinciding with percussive flames. For more info on pyrophones, check out the EMI archives by Bart Hopkins. I would like to build one with Pyrex tubes and the equivalent of bunsen burners in each one.
