‘Soundscape ecologist’ Bernie Krause has been recording wild soundscapes, the wind in the trees, the chirping of birds, the subtle sounds of insect larvae, for 45 years. Krause was a pioneer of electronic music in the 60’s and 70’s, on his recordings with Paul Beaver, and, more recently, in sound environment recording.
In this TED talk, Krause discusses “what we can learn through nature’s symphonies”
Very interesting talk. Thanks for posting.
Bernie’s work over the last 45 years has been eye-opening as a reference point for habitat loss. One of the things to remember for all musicians or fans of music is how important sound (and music) is in the totality of our lives.
One of my all-time favorite cds is Krause’s “Citadels of Mystery.”
Bernie’s “Gorillas In The Mix” is a gathering of songs made up entirely of his field recordings, trimmed and played on an E-Mu Emulator II, IIRC. Its riveting because 98% of it is tuned animal sounds. A couple of the pieces are purposefully silly, but several are either haunting or dance-worthy. Bernie is one of electronic music’s tribal elders.
