Colleen Builds A Synthesizer, via neverhaveIever, is part of a documentary series featuring people trying new activities for the first time.
In this video, sound editor Colleen Hale-Hodgson builds a Music From Outer Space Weird Sound Generator.
Filmed/edited by Shetu Modi. Sound editing by Colleen Hale-Hodgson.
It’s so cute that she’s web active and probably watches a lot of TV and wants to be a sound designer, yet she thinks of synthesized music as something guitarists do. Guess she never watched a video on U2b featuring Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, or Tony Banks. Imagine that.
Nerd points if you were more interested in seeing which synth Colleen was going to build than in Colleen herself.
Points to her, though, for realizing how important sound is in visual storytelling.
“Nerd points if you were more interested in seeing which synth Colleen was going to build than in Colleen herself.”
It was cool she did one that was a challenge and not just a 555 noisemaker
cool!
@gridsleep your comment says more about you than it says about her. the ignorance of such sweeping generalisations included in your comment all too often kills good art.
Coool, nice build and she did it .. with a bit help .. buuut it works ….. respect to you young lady 😉
Really enjoyable video! It’s too bad there is not more of a support network for diy synth building. It seems like it’s mostly middle-aged guys into it, but it’s a great opportunity to learn about electronics and also to have the confidence to fix knackered gear.
Jeez, those middle-aged synth guys are such a come-down!

you don.t have to have a formal education in sound design or electronics to get in to diy
Colleen has the right idea you can learn way more by doing .
She’s got the right feeling: “What’s really selling you on the WEIGHT of something you are seeing on screen is the SOUND that they are making…. I really like the idea of telling stories through sound.” — and the right attitude: “I would love to work on another project like this … even though i wasn’t entirely sure what I was doing most of the time.” Colleen gives us a tiny inkling of how much Synthtopia would improve if it welcomed women. Oh well……
Yeah Synthhead, force more women to join in. Stop being so unwelcoming.
🙂
I should try a DIY kit synth project like that sometime as well :).
