Verbos Electronics Modular Synth Update (MusikMesse 2015)

In this video, via AskAudio Mag, designer Mark Verbos shows us his Verbos Electronics Eurorack synth modules at MusikMesse 2015.

Verbos Electronics manufactures a line of Eurorack format synthesizer modules that are inspired by the so-called ‘West Coast’ tradition of modular manufacturers like Buchla.

The designs are focused on discrete transistor circuits, hardware CMOS logic and vintage electronics design techniques and high-quality materials.

See the Verbos Electronics site for details.

  1. Poor Mark, having to explain his “tasty little sections” and “gadgets” to some guy who’d clearly never had the eurorack induction and chose to jump in at the deep end. Trade shows, eh?!

      1. Fair do’s then. I guess it would all be a little too cosy and exclusive if these spots only ever consisted of experts talking to experts. And to give Rounik (the interviewer) his due, he did come across as genuinely enthusiastic and excited by what he was being shown. Could be a new eurorack convert!

        1. Hey, Rounik here.

I am most definitely fast becoming a Eurorack convert. Always been in to the modular world.
I was cringing inside as I said “gadgets” to Mark… but to be fair it was a long few days at Messe this year.

You’re correct though, as a self-confessed “not as Eurorack savvy as I’d like to be” guy, I was hopeful that Mark would make Euroracks accessible to the rest of us… I think he did that. And certainly I was genuinely excited too! πŸ™‚

          1. Hey Rounik,
My sincere apologies for being too quick to judge. Like many people I can be a bit of a harsh knee-jerk critic in the comfort of these relatively anonymous and unaccountable forums. I’ve never even been to a music tech trade show, let alone in the role of a reporter. I can imagine though, that it’s a pretty full-on and draining experience and I really do appreciate the work that you and your colleagues do to bring us self-appointed arm chair ‘experts’ news of new gear. Good on you and more power to your elbow!

            1. Hey Ununseptium,

No apologies necessary! And thanks for your very considered and thoughtful comment. I’m learning all the time… especially about being in front of the camera (I prefer being behind one πŸ˜‰ – and I’ve plenty to learn in terms of the whole Eurorack world, so your initial comment only reflected my internal critic anyways… and I’m fast becoming a Eurorack convert too. All good!

              πŸ™‚

            2. Hey Ununseptium,

No apologies necessary! And thanks for your very considered and thoughtful comment. I’m learning all the time… especially about being in front of the camera (I prefer being behind one πŸ˜‰ – and I’ve plenty to learn in terms of the whole Eurorack world, so your initial comment only reflected my internal critic anyways… I’m fascinated by the whole movement and how it’s becoming accepted more into mainstream music production parlance. Very healthy to see πŸ™‚

  2. Really cool stuff, especially that harmonic oscillator.

I do have to say, that has to one of the worst ways to put your logo on a mic

  3. The Verbos modular is the most beautifully designed Eurorack modular synth, in my opinion, with a consistent look where color is used meaningfully.

And the modules seem to actually improve upon Buchla’s in many ways – from consistency to usability to compatibility.

I’ve heard that the actual electronics behind the module are pretty sloppy, though. Can anyone comment on that? Is that a potential problem with these modules?

    1. Not at all sloppy. In fact just the opposite. In my experience (I have the Complex Osc, Harmonic Osc, Voltage Multistage, Dual Four-Pole and Amp & Tone Controller) these modules are built to an incredibly high specification and perform with complete reliability. Part of what I feel you pay for, in these higher than average priced modules, is the attention to detail in getting them to this standard of finish and performance.
