Syntorial is video game-like training app, designed to teach you how to program synth patches by ear.
The app combines video demonstrations with interactive challenges, providing hands-on experience programming patches on a built-in soft synth.
Here’s a video intro:
The free app comes with the first 22 lessons, as well as Syntorial’s fully featured synth (see above).
An in-app upgrade unlocks the remaining features, which include:
- 199 Lessons, including 129 Challenges, 147 Videos, and 706 Patches;
- additional lessons covering Cakewalk Z3TA+ 2 and Minimoog Voyager:
- access across iPad, Mac & Windows; and
- the plugin version of Syntorial’s synth, Primer.
Syntorial is a free download. The full version is currently US $89.99, normally $129.99.
If you’ve used Syntorial, leave a comment and let us know what you think of it!
Syntorial is probably the best way to understand subtractive synthesis, too bad it’s not out on the iphone!!
This is pretty amazing. I am very impressed that someone or a team took the time and energy to make this.
It’s just one person. 🙂
“This app is brilliant! I wonder how much the full version…”
**129.99**
“That escalated quickly.”
Get the PC/Mac version instead if you want it today — there’s a sale for $90. You get an account login that works on the iPad, and progress syncs via Dropbox.
I like Syntorial a lot, but I do hope he’ll spin Primer off into its own iPad freebie app. It’s a perfectly fine if unoriginal 2-osc synth, it’d be a good loss leader for Syntorial proper, and it wouldn’t be 200+MB.
No shade though, this app really is brilliant.
