Developer Jonathan Mackenzie shared this sneak preview of scriptSONIC – a programmable musical instrument for the iPad.
According to Mackenzie, scriptSONIC combines the open-ended creative power of a programming language with the expressiveness of a touch-screen.
You can use scriptSONIC to:
- generate and control interactive musical patterns using simple JavaScript code;
- make interactive rhythms;
- send and respond to MIDI messages;
- explore notes, chords and scales;
- manipulate samples and live sound input; and
- record the results.
Details on pricing and availability for scriptSonic are to be announced.

Atonality always sounds weird to me.
I get the same result letting my cat walk on my master keyboard.
But surely the cat is a more expensive tool, and doesn’t know javascript code.
I will almost certainly buy this (as long as it’s not priced something outrageous like $30+).
Lots and lots of JavaScript developers out there.
