The latest episode of Song Exploder, embedded below, features composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, discussing his score for the new sci fi film, Arrival.
In the film Arrival, Amy Adams plays a linguist trying to decode an alien language. The score is Jóhannsson’s third collaboration with director Denis Villeneuve.
Jóhannsson breaks down a piece from the score called Heptapod B, and how, like the film, it revolves around the concept of language.

starts out, “dearly departed”?
outstanding score, creating an alien, mysterious, and occasionally menacing atmosphere. works just perfectly with the movie
I loved this move and the music. I will definitely ask Mrs. Claus for both.
The music presented in this example is nice and it was nice listening to it while watching the movie. But there was one deeply annoying piano piece all over the movie which kind of killed the movie for me.
Wish there were more moviess like this but with less romance.
His music is inspiring.
