Sonic State’s Nick Batt let us know about new Max For Live software synth, Mono Junction, that they and Meta Function are offering as a free download.
In case there was any doubt, the new synth’s got pulse width modulation out the wazoo. That’s the layman’s explanation, though, so here’s what the developers have to say about it:
Mono Junction can take your tone into new sonic territories. Featuring a novel NegSawPW waveshape, extended pulse width modulation sounds are easily created.
Two saw waves are offset one by half cycle and subtracted from each other. This results in PWM-style sounds not possible with conventional means, via phase shift and frequency ratio controls. These allow you to create extreme PWM and detuned sounds.
Here’s Batt’s intro video for Mono Junction:

Pricing and Availability
Mono Junction is a free download (email signup is required) via Sonic State.
Requirements: It’s a Max for Live device, so Ableton Live and Max For Live are required:
- Ableton Live 9.6.1 or above is recommended, on Macintosh and PC.
- Max 7.2.3 is required, but a full license of Max is not needed.
If you’ve used Mono Junction, leave a comment and share your thoughts on it!
I’ll give my money if someone makes these Max for LIve Machines run independently for use in any other DAW.
here we go again, ANOTHER post which says free BUT miss saying you need another piece of software to run
You are very “vocal” on Synthtopia” – lots of posts and no substance I’m afraid.
Plugin in question is excellent, but of course you need Ableton Suite to run it.
If you can’t afford it or don’t have it, don’t post negative comments please.

Not an Ableton user… 🙁
Since VST/AU are already universal you have got to ask if Ableton is sponsoring this in some way.
Well, Ableton is sponsoring it by the fact that they have created a framework that allows Max devices to run inside Live. A lot of people prefer to develop devices in MAX over VSTs because the framework is very solid, easy to use and there are a lot of building blocks to speed up development. The choice to use MAX for Live over MAX MSP could be financial or personal preference.
Ehhhh……. should I? The only Ableton instrument I’ve ever used is Impulse. I do everything else with hardware.
For anyone liking the PWM this synth is badass! Lots of mod options, and free! Spent the best part of an eve just getting lost in sound design. Deffo recommend!
