This video, via Wintergatan, is an demo of the Modulin – a custom hybrid violin/modular synthesizer.
It’s a bizarre hybrid, and looks heavy and cumbersome to use, but it is also expressive and powerful.
Check it out and let us know what you think of the idea of putting modular synth components in a violin!
The best Theremin I’ve never heard. Very accomplished performance. Thanks for the music and inspiration.
Wintergatan’s videos give me faith for humanity. They do some awesome stuff.
oh come on this has to be a joke, all he’s done is screw some modular bits together, this is no hybrid, violin or otherwise.
its screwing two motorcycles together and calling them a hybrid car.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvUU8joBb1Q – this was amazing, the mondulin isnt.
and if you cross an owl with a goat….
you get a hoot’nanny
Looks are deceiving. This is great sounding with great expression!
Even granting that having to hold this thing sticking out from your shoulder like a violin is a good idea (which I doubt), why, exactly, is it a good idea to have to carry the weight of the modules?
A violin is held the way it is to allow bowing. This thing has nothing like the expressiveness of a bow.
“Expressive” should be a code-word for “solution in search of a problem.”
