Oscillator Sink has updated Synthmata, a free, browser-based editor which works with the Korg Volca FM and the DX7, adding an automatic/random patch generator.
Rather than “full random” (which would result in unusable patches 90 percent of the time) Synthmata’s Randomizer has a number of parameters to help the user guide Synthmata into the right ‘ballpark’ before generating a new patch.
Pricing and Availabilty
Synthmata is available now and is free to use.
Note that this can be made to work with the Dexed VST. Just host Dexed in your DAW and route MIDI in/out to it accordingly.
Are you sure about this? I’ve tried to set it up and can’t get it to work. Ableton MIDI track with Dexed, receiving MIDI from IAC Driver bus 1, channel 1, Synthmata loaded in my browser sending midi accordingly. No luck.
I found his videos on FM synthesis and the Volca FM Very helpful. I really wish that his Synthmata was available as standalone, without the need for a web connection.
You can actually download the whole site from my GitHub page and use it offline. You still need a browser (Chrome), but you don’t need any internet connection. You can get it here: https://github.com/synthmata/synthmata.github.io
Just bear in mind that you won’t be getting any updates so you may want to periodically go back and download the newest version.
Ok, Thanks!
Wait, I clicked on the link and I got nothing… Do I need to sign up for Github to see the download?
There’s a button that says “Clone or Download”. Click on that then choose “Download Zip” . No need to sign up.
Perfect. I’m not usually this dense, but your help is appreciated. Works just fine!
Thanks!
Would this also work with my PreenFM2? That would be very cool.
I have used this and can recommend it. Thanks to Alex for his hard work.
Hows does this work – the Volca FM has 4 operators only, whereas the DX7 (and Dexed) have 6 ooerators ?
The Volca FM does have 6 operators.
Installed Chrome, still does not work 🙁
Hi there, could you give me a few more details?
When you say “does not work” does it get to the point where your MIDI devices are listed in the “Select MIDI Device drop down and if so, what MIDI interface are you using (and what synth actually – there might be additional steps if you’re using one of the Yamahas). Hopefully I can help you trouble shoot and get you up and running
I’m struggling to understand how to get this to interface with the volca. trying to use it via keystep, but i don’t think it will transmit sysex…

Yeah, sadly, for some reason Arturia chose not to let the Keystep transmit Sysex, so it won’t work with synthmata (or anything else that uses sysex) sorry!
Using Opera with Volca FM connected via midi to my usb interface. Synthmata recognises my Usb interface and my Novation Circuit, but not the Volca FM. Super confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
