Behringer Odyssey Moving To Production, With $500 Target Price

Uli Behringer today shared this teaser photo of his company’s upcoming ARP Odyssey clone, noting:

We’re excited to announce that the Odyssey is now in pre-production. It’s all looking good and we’re confident to soon switch to full production.

That’s one great sounding synth!

Behringer has not officially announced details on availability or pricing for its Odyssey clone yet.  But when the company originally announced their interest in creating a Behringer Odyssey two years ago, they suggested a target price of $500:

How would you feel if we build an authentic ARP Odyssey synthesizer, but with a unique 3-mode VCF circuitry (that replicates all MK I to III versions) plus full Midi/USB implementation?

Price around US$ 500.

  2. What’s the point of the point of another Odyssey clone, after two previous Odyssey clones from Korg, created with the original designer?

    This will be what – the 6th version of the Odyssey? Wasn’t the Odyssey originally ARP’s take on the Minimoog, too?

    1. Why not? Can’t understand your negativity. As someone said before, pianos, violins, flutes, nobody complains about different musical instrument makers creating numerous versions (copies) of these designs. I have an ARP Axxe, had it for decades ..and it’s completely knackered. If I can buy a full size odyssey for around the same price as getting my Axxe fixe, I know which makes more sense.

      The Korg are good .. but the most affordable model lacks a keyboard, the next model up has a slim keyboard and the full sized version is around $1200 .. more than twice the price of this.

      As for an ARP or Moog … very different appproach the ARP does so many things the Moog doesn’t.

      For someone like me who has played with these thing for over 40 years .. I’m happy as a pig in mud that I have a chance to play these amazing designs again.

    2. I wonder the same, it offers nothing new and is about the same price. If they come out with a euro-rack format version like their other mono’s that would make more sense and offer a new and practical take. It seems it would have been better if they had spent the time and resources on not cloning something all ready on the market and isn’t maybe the biggest seller.

      I’m putting money away for the UB-Xa and hope they also make a Prophet 5 clone seeing as they already have all the chips in production with their Pro1 clone, that would sell like crazy even at $2000!

    2. Pianos don’t have a mod or pitch wheel either. ‘hard to play’ pretty much describes every musical instrument, depending on your skill level.

  7. Only reason Behringer made the Odyssey was to prepare for the Behringer Arp 2600 clone. This was just to get the designs on point. So enjoy the appetizer.

  10. For it’s time it was special. But for now it’s not realy interesting anymore imo. If it was a Quadra…then it would be a different story.

  13. 2 big reasons to get this over the Korg…

    1:/ saves presets (see the screen top left and patch button row on front above keys)
    2:/ sliders send CC midi.

    Theres 2 biggies for me.

    2. wrong info man:
      – it doesnt saves presets…
      – it doesn’t sends CCs…. (the analog controls are full analog no digital control, its the same experience like the MS20 mini or the KorgARP in which it only sends and receives the notes from the keyboard).

      The real new additions are:
      – it has a 64 step sequencer (with memories).
      – it has an FX processor (amazing quality like the ones in X32 mixers and DeepMind12).
      – it has lights in the faders.

        1:. it saves presets. (you think those patch buttons are just a sequencer?? haha)
        2:/ the faders send CC midi. He saw it in action. In fact, its one of the only reasons why Behringer proceeded with their version, becuase the Korg one doesnt do this so they decided theirs had enough of a point-of-difference with this to make it worthy

        but im sure the other things are right as well (step sequencer, FX, lights).

          In 2:20 of the video the Behringer representative says clearly and loud ” NO, it doesn’t have presets, these are just like for the sequencer” …. not so funny now isnt it?…

            The guy who i spoke to who played it also said it sounded generic and plain, nothing like the Korg or original version. So there you go. Maybe hes wrong twice?

    This is the best time to buy synths.
    I paid, what was the cost of an house for synthersizers when I started,because of the love of music and never criticising manufacturers one from another.

    1. I’ve played the KORG and Behringer Odyssey, the latter isn’t “quite right” it’s a good attempt but if that doesn’t matter fill your boots. The quality is also streets apart, the Behringer finish is no where near as nice, feels like a cheap knock off. Then finally, it has Behringer written on the back if anyone cares about that???
      I’d love to know what the reliability record if for Behringers synths, that don’t have much of a track record where Korg have almost 50 years since the introduction of Protoype 1.

        Where did you play a Behringer Odyssey? The protype at Superbooth?

        The build quality on the Korg MS-20 mini and mini Odyssey is not stellar. They feel cheap, especially the mini key bed.

        The Deep Mind 12 and 6, Model D, and Neutron have solid build quality. They do not feel cheap. Why would a Behringer Odyssey have subpar build quality when compared to Behringer’s other synths?

          1. The build quality of the Korg MS-20 mini and Odyssey are not even close to other Korg products.

            Enjoy your mini-keys. I will be playing a full size Odyssey with full size keys.

            1. in that matter you can buy the desktop version of both MS-20 and Odyssey..and use your fav keyboard controller…your argue…is not really valid 😉

  16. It looks like many people complains without investigating the specs of these synth.

    – Arp Odyssey with Full size keys.
    – Step Sequencer (with memories).
    – Multi FX processor. (I love the sound of the X32, X-Air and Deepmind12 FX processors from behringer).

    … for $500??? I love these new ARP.

  17. No presets and no midi CC = no sale. Because that would make for modulation heaven. These re-hashes should improve on originals. Might as use Korg vst/ iPad app, or actual hardware for analog experience.

      I sometimes do 10-20 or even more variations on my synth patch creations, and don’t even get me started about live situations. Once upon a time I used 2 Sequential Pro-One synths live, I have no desire to go back in time and frantically twist knobs between songs lol.

      Seriously, why would I want any synth in 2019 that has no preset memory capability?

  18. No presets? I am out :(. I love my Boog but I despise not being able to save patches like I can on my BSII, or in fact almost any modern synth. Authenticity … blah, blah … don’t care, want presets.

  19. I had the Korg mini reissue and then the Odyssey FS. The FS was cool but the action was crap; for over 2 grand I was hoping for something at least as nice as a Kronos. It was cheap so I didn’t use it and eventually sold it. I have thought about getting the module since then.

    If this feels good to play and seems as solidly built as their Model D, I may go this route instead. I’ll wait till it appears and then make a judgement call between it and the Korg module based on sound, feel, and quality.

    Right now I record with the Korg Arp Odyssey Module with one effects box.

    I guess I might have to start using keys again instead of sliders and switches, nah, I’ll just stick the Korg Arp over the damned keys.

    Effects and sequencer yes.

    Keyboards no.

  22. Wheels, please. Not the crappy, imprecise buttons. (I remember when the original came out. There was a reason why ARP tossed the buttons for the next go-round – strident user demand.)

Gosh ppl are really weird , for years we had to listen to this “digital crap give us back analogue and bla bla bla” Now that they remake the original monos in full analogue glory so that u dont hear zipper noise or stepping or any digital artifacts but u can tweak knobs in full powerful analog glory .. now … u want midi cc and presets !!!

  24. Just waiting until 2nd/3rd handed become dirt cheap and then pull out the board and mod it into a 1 U rack with MIDI presets and CC, digital pots. Lost faith in “Binnovation”

  25. I am all for this and what Behringer is doing. I did not like the sound of their model d compared to my Moog D but for the price it is more than fair. This looks like a great deal to me and I will definitely buy one.

  26. The Korg Mini Oddy has a design fault which affects the LFO retrigger of the Envelopes. It was corrected for the Desktop and FS models. If the Behringer is $499, I’ll definitely be getting one.

  27. Posting from the future. This clone isn’t out yet despite promises it was coming in Februrary There’s no news, but there is UN-news, that the major stores have REMOVED this synth from their listings available from preorder. This is not reported by the captured music media though which serves the dishonest corporations, cu-cked media like ??-topi-ah only and not the hardworking musicians that pay the bills. They report BS from liars and slave traders and murderers such as Oo-lee B. Shamelessly. And delete on site any posts they think are critical of their horrific practices that harm people.
