Moog Sirin Takes The Minitaur To New Heights

Moog today announced Sirin, a new instrument they describe as ‘the Analog Messenger Of Joy’.

Sirin is a limited-edition synthesizer module, based on the Moog Taurus sound engine, and presented in the familiar compact form of the Moog Minitaur. It also addresses the chief complaint some had the Minitaur, its limitation to playing notes below C5. It’s the first instrument in Moog’s Taurus family designed to generate pitches far above above middle C, with an extended frequency range that reaches notes up to D8.

Features:

  • Brushed stainless steel chassis
  • Two modified Moog Taurus analog oscillators with Hard Sync
  • Moog Taurus Ladder Filter (20Hz – 20kHz)
  • Two lightning-fast ADSR envelopes
  • Multi-wave LFO w/ MIDI sync
  • Glide with selectable type
  • Up to 128 onboard presets
  • Extensive hidden functionality accessible via front panel and MIDI
  • Free Editor / Librarian standalone and plugin software
  • Handcrafted by Moog’s Employee-owners in Asheville, NC

In this video, Nick Sanborn (Sylvan Esso, Made Of Oak) explores using the Sirin, together with the DFAM analog synthesizer:

With the exception of the DFAM’s percussive analog backbeat, all sounds in this video come from Sirin. Sanborn uses the free downloadable Sirin Editor Librarian software to automate and recall parameter settings as he layers multiple monophonic tracks from Sirin.

    1. it’s also useable as an external filter, has full digital recall and presets which are changeable at audio rates and is usable as external controller right?

I mean, I can imagine this as a nice computer supplement for sure. Battery power option would be better though…

  1. Just observations, not a negative comment: At first glance of the specs, this seems to be a Minitaur reworked to get around the frequency range limitation of linear (V/Hz) oscillators, probably by changing to V/Octave oscillators. Other than that, a resurface treatment following the aesthetic break from the black + silver/wood accent introduced by the Grandmother, and it’s $100 more. Am I missing something??

    1. go with the classic Minitaur for the black color, it’s basically identical as far as i can see so far. The new colors are neat i think tho, like the Grandmother, and (more classically) The Source! (still the only synth i know of to have ‘The’ in the official name)

    1. The new Rossum Trident oscillator is $600, and it’s just an oscillator module. Yes, there are three oscillators there, so you could look at it as being $200 per oscillator, but still that’s not cheap. And there are a number of mono synths in the $500-$600 range. I’ve seen a number of posts here and there from people who wanted a Taurus that had a higher range, so this is for them.

    1. You’re being melodramatic. Moog is a small company still, and while it can’t afford to keep on too many low-selling product lines, I can’t believe people are complaining that they have fun R&D projects that occasionally managed to be sold.

  2. My GOSH, it goes up to C8! What a selling point! at “only” $599 for this keyboardless simple synth, it should (not) sell like hotcakes!

  3. I think most of the complainers don’t realize that this is fully CV controlled (that’s how the demo vid was made) but ALSO has a full AU/VST VI or standalone editor implementation. This is a pretty powerful, all analog desktop mono synth in a compact form factor. $600 for something made in the US and if you want to go to Asheville, you can watch it being made.

Also worth mentioning that this is basically a rebuild of the Minitaur – not a firmware update. From what I understand, a complete redesign of the voltage rails and oscillators to allow more range with the same overall sound.

  4. The “MOOG” print rises the price by 200$. They should instead sell it seperate as a sticker for this price to make their synths competitive

    1. Yet read the linked post from above “First pics of minitaur” and look how excited people were by it. How much can change in 5 years?
